Kobe and LeBron's Olympic Squad Lose to 1992's Dream Team, Says NBA 2K13

Kobe and LeBron's Olympic Squad Lose to 1992's Dream Team, Says NBA 2K13Kobe and LeBron's Olympic Squad Lose to 1992's Dream Team, Says NBA 2K13 If you got in on this summer's bar argument over which U.S. Olympic basketball team was better, and were convinced that the Dream Team could beat anything that walked the earth, including a team of Kobe Bryant and LeBron James, then NBA 2K13 has good news for you.

The United States' 1992 Olympic basketball team of Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley prevailed over their 2012 counterparts, 133-126, in a simulation run on NBA 2K13, which releases on Tuesday. It was not a runaway victory, but the Dream Team held a lead for all but one brief instance in the second quarter.

This game was set for two computer-controlled teams to play each other, in full 12-minute quarters, on Hall-of-Fame difficulty (which governs computer-controlled players' behavior.)

2K Sports, at the urging of executive producer Jay-Z, reunited the entire 1992 Olympic team in a video game for the first time in 20 years, mostly to settle the argument Bryant started when he ventured that the 2012 Olympians would win.

Matchups, of course, are at the heart of this argument, and a really bad one in favor of the Dream Team made a huge difference. Chris Paul, paired off against Magic Johnson, just had no answer for a guy eight inches taller and a lot heavier. That's probably a big reason why Magic ended up as the player of the game, leading all scorers with 34 points on 15-of-17 shooting, while adding five rebounds and six assists.

I had some difficulty with video capture in the first quarter, which explains the dearth of highlights from it. Team USA 2012 took a 37-36 lead at 10:45 of the second quarter on a jumper by Russell Westbrook, which you can see above. It was the only lead Team USA 2012 had all game. Twice they got it to within 1 point, the latest with about 9 minutes to go in the third quarter, but the Dream Team had very little trouble scoring and forced Team USA 2012 to methodically attack the basket. They only got 14 points on the fast break. A 17-6 run in the fourth quarter still got Team USA 2012 no closer than 5.

Paul still distributed eight assists. Kevin Durant led the 2012 Olympians with 31 points, while James and Bryant each added 22. Carmelo Anthony had a respectable 16 points, six rebounds and two assists in 17 minutes of work, hitting all eight of his shots.

Jordan had 26 points on 12-for-22 shooting, with four assists, a steal and a block. Clyde Drexler picked up 16 points, 14 in the first half, before sitting most of the second. Larry Bird played more than he did when he was on this team in real life, as he suffered from back trouble for most of 1992 and was selected mostly in honor of his overall career. He logged 23 minutes in the game and hit all four of his shots, scoring nine points.

Barkley's 34 minutes were the second most of anyone on the Dream Team, and he came away with just six points and four rebounds, matched up against James for most of the evening. David Robinson had probably the game's best dunk, slipping off a screen through a completely vacated lane to throw down a thundering, two-handed, let-me-clear-my throat jam.

Jordan was right that the Dream Team's defense and shot blocking would likely prove the difference, but it wasn't by a wide margin. The Dream Team picked up five steals and four blocks, but Team USA 2012 still shot 62 percent and did a little bit better in rebounding, although having more misses gooses that stat. The teams attempted only seven three point shots combined.

One note: Neither team's lone collegian?Anthony Davis for 2012, Christian Laettner for the Dream Team?got into the game.

NBA 2K13 arrives in stores on Tuesday.

Helpful Tips For Your Self-Improvement Mission | The Thrash ? Jeff ...

Working toward your personal development is a wonderful commitment. It can give you more confidence, and it can improve your overall attitude and way of life. Continue reading this article for helpful information concerning the meaning of personal development.

Should a therapist help you with personal development? It can be a good idea, and in some cases, it may be necessary. Either way, you will definitely need a system of support. You are going to want to have your friends and family as part of your support, and you may even seek out support groups. Maybe you?re trying to stop drinking alcohol or you want to lose weight. There are wonderful support groups for each of these.

Make sure you research information regarding your own personal development. After you set your goals, see what experiences others have had. Make sure you?re accessing reliable sources, and seek the advice of people in person as well. Other people have been in similar situations, and you can learn much by listening to and observing other people.

Make sure you seek out advice from family and friends. The great thing about this world is someone else has been in your situation before. You?re unique and special, but you?re not the only person who has been through trials, hardships, and just plain life.

Make adjustments to your strategies when necessary. You might find that something isn?t working for you quite as planned. This is going to happen, and this is where you learn from your mistake, which is part of personal development.

Keeping a journal is a great idea to stay motivated towards your goals. It can help you identify who you truly are, and it can help you get in touch with yourself. It can also help you track your progress and keep you motivated as you work towards your short-term and long-term goals. Make sure you record these goals and your progress in your journal as well as your other thoughts and experiences.

Think of different ways you can eliminate stress in your life. Get rid of negative influences, and try to slow down when you can. The world keeps trying to move way too fast, and this can really stress a person out. Think of ways you can add positive influences into your life. Exercise is a great stress reliever, and so is making time during the day to take care of your body.

Tracking your progress towards personal development helps you see where you?ve been and where you?re headed. It can help you develop new goals, and it can help you identify other negative influences as well. Without tracking your progress, you can?t really stay focused and moving forward either.

Now you should have a better idea as to how to approach growing as a person and pursuing your interests and goals. Remember the advice you?ve read here as you continue to strive for your own personal development.

Do you want to find out how you can get yourself improved and move on in life? Then read more about depressing quotes about love or learn more about quotes about being single now.

Libya thwarts planned anti-militia protests

TRIPOLI/BENGHAZI, Libya (Reuters) - Authorities in Libya thwarted plans for a huge demonstration against militia in the capital Tripoli on Friday, while in Benghazi, scene of mass anti-militia protests last week, supporters of an ousted Islamist group returned to the streets.

Activists had hoped that a planned demonstration in the capital would be as successful as a giant anti-militia protest held in Benghazi last week, but only about 400 protesters turned up on Friday after the country's mufti and mosque preachers warned people not to attend.

Those that did turn up gathered in Tripoli's Algeria Square and then marched to the main Martyr's Square, chanting and clapping, and bemoaning what they described as an attempt to silence them.

"I am one of the people who carried a gun and fought (Muammar) Gaddafi, and now I am back on the square, to say 'no' again. No to the leaders of militia, yes to a civil state," said protester Murad Zikri, who runs a school in Tripoli.

Last week's Benghazi protests were the biggest outpouring yet of public anger at the militias that still patrol the country a year after the end of the civil war that toppled the late Libyan autocrat.

The protests were spurred in part by a backlash against an attack on the U.S. consulate there that killed Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.

But the government, which enthusiastically backed last week's protest, appears to have decided to withdraw its support for street action. The mufti of Libya, Sadeq al-Gharyani, announced that the protests should be halted.

"I call on the people not to participate in this march so that no blood is spilled," he said beforehand. "There are some people who want to use these protests to cause violence." His condemnation was repeated at mosques.

Many of those protesters who did turn up criticized Gharyani for having spoken out against the march, chanting: "Where where where? Where are you mufti?"

VIOLENCE IN BENGHAZI

Activist Kulud Dribikha, 50, said the authorities had withdrawn support for anti-militia demonstrations after feeling threatened when marchers clashed with powerful groups that back the government at the end of last week's Benghazi demonstration.

"They wanted a scapegoat for the attack on the U.S. embassy. They didn't expect (the demonstrators) to reach the groups that they support," she said.

In Benghazi, the scene of last week's huge anti-militia protest, a small group of supporters of the Islamist group Ansar al-Sharia, who had been driven out of the city by demonstrators last week, protested outside a hospital that used to be guarded by the fighters, demanding they be allowed to return.

Men later attacked a nearby police station, where they threw grenades at a gate and trashed cars. Police said no one was hurt and the crowd was dispersed.

Armed men also turned up at a second police station and opened fire. Police officer Muftag al-Zuwai said two people had been wounded there before a group of civilians had arrived and helped chase the gunmen away.

Soldiers on the scene fired in the air to disperse a crowd, and in the melee attackers attempted to set prisoners inside free.

An anti-militia protest planned for Friday in Benghazi was called off. "There really isn't a mood for a protest in Benghazi," said Wanis Najim, one of the organizers.

Since the death of Stevens, the government has faced calls to rein in the militias. It has taken a twin-track approach - shutting down Islamist militias operating without permission, but also offering public backing to many of the most powerful armed groups, which have official licenses.

This year's flu vaccine guards against new strains

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Time to get your flu vaccine ? and a surprising new report shows babies and toddlers seem to be getting protected better than the rest of us.

Last year's flu shot won't shield you this year: Two new strains of influenza have begun circling the globe, and the updated vaccine appears to work well against them, government officials said Thursday.

Just because last year was the mildest flu season on record doesn't mean the virus might not bounce back to its usual ferocity this winter.

"People cannot become complacent this year," said Dr. Howard Koh, assistant secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, who received his own flu shot Thursday.

A yearly vaccination now is recommended for nearly everybody, but new figures released Thursday show that last year 52 percent of children and just 39 percent of adults were immunized.

Best protected: Three-quarters of tots ages 6 months to 23 months were vaccinated. That's a significant jump from the previous year, when 68 percent of those youngsters were immunized.

But even though seniors are at especially high risk of severe illness or death if they catch the flu, just 66 percent of them were immunized, a number that has been slowly dropping for several years.

Older adults got a little lost in the recent public health push to explain that flu vaccine benefits all ages ? and it's time to target them again, said Dr. Daniel Jernigan, a flu specialist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In contrast, child deaths from flu have made headlines in recent years ? the U.S. counted 34 pediatric deaths last year ? raising parents' awareness of the risk, he said.

The only ones who shouldn't get vaccinated: babies younger than 6 months and people with severe allergies to the eggs used to make the vaccine.

Flu specialists can't say how bad this winter's flu season might be. Influenza strains constantly evolve, and some cause more illness than others.

But strains from the H3N2 family tend to be harsher than some other flu types, and a new H3N2 strain is included in this year's vaccine because it is circulating in parts of the world.

Because of that strain, "I am pretty confident that this year will be a more traditional flu season" than last year, CDC's Jernigan told The Associated Press. "People won't have had any real exposure to that."

Only one ingredient in this year's flu vaccine was retained from last year's, protection against the H1N1 strain that caused the 2009 swine flu pandemic and has been the main kind of influenza circulating since. Also new in this year's shot is protection against a different Type B strain.

Other trends the CDC spotted last year:

?Roughly a third of teenagers got a flu vaccine.

?So did 45 percent of high-risk young and middle-aged adults, those who are particularly vulnerable to flu because they also have asthma, diabetes or any of a list of other health conditions.

?About 47 percent of pregnant women were vaccinated. Women have five times the risk of severe illness if they catch the flu when they're pregnant, and they can require hospitalization and suffer preterm labor as a result. Vaccination not only protects them, but recent research shows it also provides some protection to their newborns as well.

Vaccination rates vary widely among states, too. Nevada vaccinates a third of people who are eligible, while South Dakota reaches 51 percent. In Iowa, 76 percent of seniors get their flu shot, compared to half in Alaska. In Rhode Island, 74 percent of children are vaccinated, compared to 39 percent in Alaska.

Manufacturers are expected to make about 135 million doses of flu vaccine this year, and there are four different forms to choose from:

?The traditional flu shot is for all ages and people with high-risk health conditions.

?FluMist, the squirt-up-the-nose version, is for healthy people ages 2 to 49 who aren't pregnant.

?A high-dose shot is available for people 65 and older.

?And the intradermal shot ? a skin-deep prick instead of the usual inch-long needle ? is available for 18- to 64-year-olds.

The vaccine is covered by insurance, and Medicare and some plans don't require a copay; drugstore vaccination programs tend to charge about $30.

People can be vaccinated anytime, but Jernigan cautioned that it takes about two weeks for protection to kick in. Flu typically starts to appear in October or November, and peaks in January or February.

Also this year, public health groups are urging workers in doctors' offices, hospitals and particularly nursing homes, where patients are especially vulnerable, to do a better job getting vaccinated.

About 67 percent of health care workers were vaccinated last year, a number that's slowly rising. Doctors are the best role models, with about 86 percent immunized. But anyone ? from the receptionist to the person delivering meals ? can spread influenza to patients, and just half of those workers in nursing homes got vaccinated last year, Koh said.

In addition to patient safety, hospitals and clinics need to have enough healthy staff to care for the sick once the flu strikes, said Dr. William Schaffner of Vanderbilt University.

When that happens, "we need to be vertical, not horizontal," he said.

US eases Myanmar import ban

NEW YORK (AP) ? Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Wednesday the U.S. will ease its import ban on Myanmar that had been a key plank of remaining American economic sanctions.

"In recognition of the continued progress toward reform and in response to requests from both the government and the opposition, the United States is taking the next step in normalizing our commercial relationship," Clinton said during a meeting with President Thein Sein on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly.

"We will begin the progress of easing restrictions on imports of Burmese goods into the United States," Clinton said. "We hope this will provide more opportunities for your people to sell their goods into our market."

The announcement follows the Obama administration's resumption of normal diplomatic relations and the suspension of a U.S. investment ban.

"We are very grateful for the actions of the United States," Thein Sein said.

Myanmar democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who is on a landmark U.S. visit that coincides with the president's visit, last week voiced support for the step, saying Myanmar should not depend on the U.S. to keep up its momentum for democracy. For years she advocated sanctions as a way of putting political pressure on the then-ruling junta.

The Myanmar opposition leader is revered by both Republicans and Democrats in Washington, and her endorsement is a key guide for U.S. policymakers.

In August, Congress renewed sanctions legislation, but allowing Obama to waive its provisions. Wednesday's announcement on the import ban begins that process. Easing the ban also requires the issuance of a Treasury license.

The Obama administration has been at pains to not let Nobel winner Suu Kyi's high-profile U.S. trip overshadow Thein Sein, who still faces opposition within Myanmar's military to political reform.

The Myanmar president is due to address the General Assembly on Thursday, and he is not expected to cross paths with Suu Kyi, who is scheduled to leave New York late Wednesday.

On Wednesday, Suu Kyi addressed a high-level U.N. meeting on education on the sidelines of the General Assembly.

In Washington last week, she met privately with President Barack Obama and was presented with Congress' highest award, cementing her remarkable transition from dissident to globe-trotting stateswoman.

Congress has also initiated legislation that would allow the U.S. to provide financial aid to impoverished Myanmar through international financial institutions like the World Bank.

UICC Seeks Global Ban of Asbestos

The Union for International Control of Cancer (UICC) took a major step recently when it called for a complete ban on the mining, use and exportation of all forms of asbestos, Right On Canada reported.

According to the news source, the UICC, which includes more than 700 member organizations throughout 155 different countries, pointed specifically to countries that mine and export the carcinogenic substance. The organization sought to halt these mining and exportation practices, while offering economic assistance during the transition period for mining communities.

One community that immediately comes to mind is that of the appropriately named Asbestos, Quebec. With Canada well-known for its exportation of asbestos to developing countries, the town of Asbestos is a major factor, as it hosts the Jeffrey Mine. The mine recently received a boost in the form of a $58 million loan from the government. This, despite a number of calls for Canada to bring its exportation policies more in line with its asbestos restrictions at home.

UICC statement points to scientific evidence

In its Position Statement calling for the ban of asbestos and the halting of such exports, the UICC noted that there has been a known link between asbestos and lung disease since the early part of the 18th century. Since the mid-1960s, it has been known that exposure to asbestos can lead to the development of lung cancer, asbestosis and malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer.

Such evidence is a major factor in the decisions of many countries to adopt bans on asbestos, particularly when the true toll of asbestos-related diseases is taken into account. According to the UICC?s statement, more than 92,000 mesothelioma deaths were reported in 83 different countries between 1994 and 2008.

Further, according to the World Health Organization, approximately 107,000 people around the world each year succumb to asbestos-related diseases like asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma.
