Death remains as implacable as ever, but the context in which most deaths occur has changed profoundly in recent times. In our age, death is much less likely than in the past to come "like a thief in the night". Thanks to modern medical technology, only one-third of deaths in industrialized countries are unanticipated. The others are expected, and occur under medical supervision, and most require medical decisions. In a new book entitled "Sterben lassen. ber Entscheidungen am Ende des Lebens" ("Letting Go. Decisions at the End of Life"), LMU clinician Ralf J. Jox, MD, PhD, considers the ethical and legal dilemmas posed by this new form of "supervised death". These issues arise because the relatives of the terminally ill, and their doctors, frequently find themselves having to decide whether to administer medical treatment, which may not be advisable under the circumstances, or let nature take its course.

Jox writes in his book about the anguish caused by these dilemmas - and none of us can be certain of avoiding such a harrowing choice and about the role of personal autonomy in the final phases of life. He outlines the legal context and the relevant medical indications, discusses suicide and assisted suicide, and ethics consultation services. The author draws on his personal experience in palliative medicine (the primary goal of which is to ensure that the terminally ill do not experience unnecessary pain in the final phase of their lives) to provide a detailed survey of palliative care in Germany.

"We must all face decisions concerning the when and how of dying not just our own death, but also, and perhaps even more urgently, the deaths of others," writes Jox. "It may be a matter of having to decide whether or not a grandmother suffering from dementia should be fed through a PEG tube, or a husband with heart disease should undergo a risky cardiac catheterization procedure, or even whether one's child who has been severely injured in a traffic accident should be artificially ventilated." His book offers practical advice on how to reach responsible decisions in such difficult circumstances.

The Five Myths of Silver Investing ? SGTreport.com

by Ryan Jordan, financialsense.com:

Oftentimes perception, and not reality, rules the day with the thousands or millions of speculators placing short term bets with assets like silver. These perceptions are particularly strong given that paper players in the silver market often control the price in the short term (6-8 months), since there is so much more paper silver than physical metal out there. As I write this, we are seeing the unwinding of quite a bit of speculative, paper activity at the COMEX, with open interest numbers (meaning the number of players in the casino) lowering to levels just above where they were in the fall of 2008 (when silver was below 10 dollars). The price of silver has fallen, but as far as I?m concerned, there is no fundamental reason for silver to be so cheap. Instead silver fundamentals are badly overshadowed by misconceptions (or outright lies) about silver. Here are five common myths about silver that I bet many speculators still believe are true:

Argentina's slumdwellers explain the election (AP)

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina ? Surrounded by some of Argentina's most expensive real estate, "La Cava" is a reeking sore of tin-roofed shacks and open sewers crowded with 10,000 people. When it comes to Argentine politics, it is the residents of this "misery village" who best describe why the president is most likely to win re-election in a landslide vote Sunday.

President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, they say, is the only one of the eight candidates who seems even remotely capable of making their lives less miserable.

While her rivals have gone negative, Fernandez, 58, is talking about "utopia" and can cite real achievements: She and her late husband and predecessor, Nestor Kirchner, have put more money in the pockets of the poor and created more social programs to help them than any leader since Argentina's seminal populist strongman, Juan Domingo Peron, and his wife Evita. Since the Kirchners took office in 2003, poverty rates have plummeted.

"I'm going with Cristina. She gives me confidence. The others all seem untrustworthy," said Carina Cisterna, 30, who thanks the president for the child welfare payments that have given her just enough money to afford a nearby 10,000 peso ($2,350) shack of her own.

La Cava residents complain bitterly about the inflation eating up their meager incomes, but they say it would be much worse if not for the 270 pesos ($63.50) a month they get for keeping each child in public school ? a $3 billion program that Fernandez created by presidential decree.

"These are things that the government does so that it can say it's doing something, but in reality, a child welfare payment is not a long-term program. And we don't know how long it's going to last," said Susana Flores, a mother of four who arrived in the slum 18 years ago.

The social spending depends on revenues now expected to decline sharply in 2012 ? money from windfall commodities taxes, the nationalized pension system and central bank reserves used to reduce foreign debt. While Argentina's current 8 percent growth leads the region, the International Monetary Fund is predicting a sharp slowdown.

The president's rivals complain that her spending spree has overly exposed Argentina to the looming global crisis.

"We are dancing happily on the Titanic," former president Eduardo Duhalde warned as he closed his campaign. "It's no longer tolerable, this official story that paints for us a marvelous country and hides the inflation."

Inflation does remain a huge threat, said Flores' father, Luis Alfonso Flores, who runs a small grocery store in La Cava. He updates a list of prices he writes neatly on a piece of notebook paper every 10 days to keep up with the wholesalers. His records suggest that prices are rising much faster than the government admits, closer to the 24 percent annual rate that would challenge Venezuela for the worst inflation in Latin America.

"The people don't have the same money," says his daughter, gesturing beyond her crowded dining room, where she was serving a traditional "puchero" stew to her extended family. She recalled that La Cava people used to grill steaks every weekend. "Before, there was smoke all over the place. Now there's hardly any. At 200 to 300 pesos ($50-75) for a barbecue, now you just can't do it."

But the polls suggest ? and La Cava's residents agree ? that nobody else seems willing or able to do more than Fernandez to keep the economy from falling apart.

"People are voting for economic stability," explained Mariel Fornoni, who directs the Management & Fit consulting firm.

Fernandez has increased retiree pensions and last month raised the minimum wage by 25 percent to $541 a month, Latin America's highest.

In contrast, her opponents failed to offer coherent visions for the future and fell into distracting disputes between them, pollsters say.

None of the president's rivals polled higher than 17 percent, while recent surveys point to Fernandez winning with between 52 percent and 57 percent of the vote. To win Sunday, she needs as little as 40 percent of the vote if the second-place finisher is at least 10 points behind.

La Cava sprang up in 1946, when the government dug a huge pit to extract red clay for bricks. Water flooded in, and then people. Their incomes improved under Peron, then became much worse during the 1976-1983 dictatorship, and again after Carlos Menem's 1990s administration left the economy in tatters.

But since the Kirchners took over, poverty levels have dropped from 54 percent to 8 percent this year, according to the government's INDEC statistics service.

Artemio Lopez, who directs the Consultora Equis firm, says his calculations suggests 21 percent of Argentina's 40 million people live in poverty, but he said the Kirchner era has seen the longest period of improvement since Argentina recovered its democracy.

Smart Cover can unlock password-protected iPads running iOS 5 (video)

Psst. Hey, do you carry a spare Smart Cover around with you? Well, if you're an unscrupulous sort, you can actually use it to bypass the lock screen of any iPad running iOS 5. This multi-step security hole will let you browse whatever's running behind the passcode screen, whether that's email, apps or the homescreen. To take advantage of the flaw, hold down the power button on the locked device until the power off slider appears, then whip the Smart Cover on, open and tap cancel. Fortunately for iPad owners, the rest of the tablet remains locked-down, but the main problem here is any sensitive information left on-screen. If you unlock the tablet to the main screen, you won't be able to open new apps, although anyone feeling particularly nefarious can apparently delete apps from that meticulously arranged home screen. See how it's done in the video after the break.

Jersey Shore Season Finale Recap: Ciao, Situation?

And like that, another season of Jersey Shore is behind us.

With pranks galore, cheating scandals, Mike being KO'd, Deena saying "do sex" a lot and more shots of Snooki's kooka than we care to remember, it's been epic.

The fourth season finale was a bit anticlimactic, however. You can't force insane fights or girl-on-girl maulings, we realize, but not a whole lot went on Thursday.

Most of the episode revolved around Mike whining and claiming he was about to quit the show for good. Did he make good on that? Will he return for Season 5?

As always, we break down all of the top Jersey Shore quotes and moments for you as we the Season 4 finale of the MTV reality smush, THG +/- style!

Jersey Shore Cast Pic in Italy

The season finale opened up with another confrontation about Mike. Ronnie tells The Situation to either apologize for causing drama or GTF outta here. Plus 10.

He even drops the A-bomb (Angelina) on Mike. Ouch! Plus 5.

Sam was totally turned on by that conversation. Lucky for Ron, who got to vent his frustrations against Mike by smushing that so good. Delightful. Plus 3.

Pauly D with the commentary: "Everyone knows it took five minutes for them to get their smush on. No wonder why Sam never smiles." LOL, and Plus 4.

Sammi Giancola and Ronnie Magro really have been so drama free this fall by their standards, which is nice ... but Minus 5 since they broke up this week.

Deena and Snooki get lost on their walk home. We love us some Team Meatball, but let's be real, their combined IQ may not reach triple digits. Minus 6.

"I was getting boob sweat. I was getting kooka sweat. I was getting ass sweat." - Deena. We need to sterilize this website after writing that. Minus 11.

Pauly D and Vinny Snuggle

Pauly D and Vinny are gonna need to get a room in Seaside together, and not just for the usual, roommate reasons. There is gonna be some full-on man snuggling in Season 5 the way this bromance is headed. Plus 7.

"The drunker I get, the uglier the girls get." - Vin. Maybe so, but Pauly is forever. Plus 2.

We're changing our tune. Watching Pauly D goof off at work totally makes the absurd concept of giving these people "jobs" during filming worthwhile. Plus 7.

Sitch told his sis on the phone he's notgoing to Jersey after Italy, which Snooki overheard. Seemed like a pity party ploy from the start. Typical Mike. Minus 8.

The roommates keep their memory alive by hanging a piece of clothing on the laundry line at work. Funny idea, but the second Deena bequeathed her thong, the pizzeria became guilty of myriad health code violations, so Minus 12.

JWoww donated her boob shirt. Plus 4. So little JWoww in this episode/season. Minus 5.

Mike made sure to separate himself as often as possible. Grow up man. Minus 9.

Siiiitch

Deena and Snookis discuss how they would bone Michaelangelo's David. Classy. Minus 3.

Snook also learned "the babies with wings" were "real." Is she for real? Minus 6.

Showing that he can be the bigger person (sort of), Sitch makes amends as the night draws to a close. Then the crew went out one last night and Mike flipped on some kid for reasons unknown. Guy's a bit of a loose cannon. Wash.

"Michael's apologies are always bullsh!t to me. It's the same sh!t, different country." - JWoww. Plus 8 for honesty and her use of the roommates' full names.

Shocker! Mike will in fact rejoin the cast for Jersey Shore Season 5! Prepare to see the sleazy pot-stirring creeper in his usual habitat. "I have no problem being the villain," he says. "Say hello to the bad guy!" So he is acting, then? Minus 8.

Either way, Mike's attention-starved antics definitely took a toll on this season. He's entertaining to a point, but dude. Quit trying to hard. Chill. Relax. Minus 12.

At least this much is real: We already know he'll walk off the set in disgust at some point. An early Plus 30 in anticipation of the drama to come this winter ...

EPISODE TOTAL: -5. SEASON TOTAL: +227.

Yes, I Watch Bachelor Pad

A few weeks ago, it was reported that Spotify, the music-streaming service, is introducing a new ?Private Listening? setting for those that wish to not have their ?guilty pleasures? broadcast on Facebook, which would make for a good lead to an Onion article, if only it were satire.?Apparently, it?s not; just ask the many twentysomethings who were caught listening to Maroon 5?nobody was laughing. Because Maroon 5, unlike, for instance, Lady Gaga, cannot be perceived as deliciously awful; it can only be awfully awful.?One is sentimentality dressed in drag, and the other is just plain sentimental, like the cultural equivalent of not being in on the joke?a hipster nightmare.

But if Henry Miller was right, and a lie reveals more than a truth, then a ?guilty pleasure? reveals more than a stated pleasure, which means, often, there?s a difference between what you say you love, and what you really love. And the need to be accepted in the right club never goes away. If that club is related to the arts, or at least is ?artsy,? or ?artistic,? or ?literary,? then you?ll need cultural capital to increase your standing.

Justin Bieber Marvels At Mariah Carey Christmas Collab

On the upcoming Under the Mistletoe, JB also teams up with Busta Rhymes for a 'genius' take on 'Little Drummer Boy.'
By James Montgomery

Justin Bieber's upcoming Under the Mistletoe album -- you know, the one powered by Christmas cookies and promoted by the first single, "Mistletoe" -- also features more than its fair share of eye-opening collaborations.

That's counting Bieber's mentor Usher (who appears on a version of "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire"), Boyz II Men, the Band Perry and, rather amazingly, Busta Rhymes, who teams up with JB on an updated take of "Little Drummer Boy."

As Bieber told MTV News during the live stream that followed the premiere of his "Mistletoe" video, the Busta collaboration is one he'll always remember ... mostly because he considers it to be quite brilliant.

"If you really think about it, it's genius, because it's rapping on a Christmas album ... and, like, I'm rapping on it. And then it's singing," he explained. "It's cool. [Busta's] got, like, a percussive voice to him [and] the beat was so crazy. I'm actually playing drums on that song, playing the snare."

And then, of course, there's his collabo with none other than Mariah Carey, on a version of her instant-classic "All I Want for Christmas Is You." If you thought he was blown away by his Busta team-up, well, you haven't heard anything yet. And he owes it all to none other than Randy Jackson.

"Mariah Carey is doing it with me! It's incredible. So excited," he said of "All I Want." "We wanted Mariah from the beginning, but we kind of thought it was really hard, so we didn't really push the idea. But she's on my label, so we reached out to some people, she got in contact with us, and Randy Jackson was actually at the studio with us, and I was like, 'Yo, you think you can help get Mariah on the Christmas album?' And he was like, 'I'm actually going to see her in New York on Monday,' and I was like 'Yo, go do that!' "

Which Bieber Christmas collabo are you most looking forward to? Let us know in the comments!

U.S. official says currency bill reflects frustration with China (Reuters)

HONG KONG (Reuters) ? Contentious legislation in the United States aimed at pressuring China to raise the value of the yuan reflects broader American frustrations with its trade partner, a senior U.S. trade official said on Tuesday.

"The currency bill that was debated in the Senate last week represented the frustrations that many people feel about China not always working as a partner in creating a level playing field," said Francisco Sanchez, the U.S. Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade.

"It isn't just about currency, it's about intellectual property rights protection, access to government procurement opportunities," he told reporters during a visit to Hong Kong.

Democratic lawmakers vowed last week to press for a vote by the House of Representatives on a bill to punish China for keeping its currency undervalued, which they say gives Chinese companies a price advantage in global markets.

Although the Senate passed the measure, its fate in the House is uncertain. Republican legislators are opposed to the bill, and the Treasury Department said last Friday it would delay until later this year a ruling on whether China is manipulating its currency.

"It is important for both China and the U.S. as trade partners to put those frustrations and concerns to rest by really and truly engaging and creating a level playing field. If we do that, the frustrations manifested by that bill will diminish or go away," Sanchez said.

Sanchez, who was in Hong Kong after a visit to Beijing with a delegation of U.S. biotechnology companies last week, said the United States was on track to achieve its goal of doubling exports.

"In order for the U.S. to achieve our aim of doubling exports by end of 2014, we need to grow our exports by 14.8 percent each year," he said.

"In 2010, our exports increased by 17 percent. In the first 8 months of 2011, exports increased by 16 percent. We are ahead of the curve and it looks like we are very much on track to achieve the president's goal of doubling exports."
