Cary?s Koka Booth Amphitheatre staged ?Romeo and Juliet? on Oct. 4-6

Last weekend, when Cary?s Koka Booth Amphitheatre gave William Shakespeare?s timeless 16th century tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, an American Civil War setting, a battle between the Blue and the Gray seemed to be in the offing, with Juliet and the Capulets clashing with Romeo and the Montagues. But nothing like that happened on closing night last Saturday. The cities of Verona and Mantua were redubbed Virginia and Maryland; and director Jerry Sipp retained the character of Prince Escalus (strutted and fretted by Brook North), who had powers of life and death over an unspecified portion of Old Virginny.

The Prince?s flowery kinsman Count Paris (Allan Maule) flounced around in an ersatz Confederate uniform while counting a disdainful Juliet (Sydney Mitchell). Lord and Lady Capulet (John Honeycutt and Susannah Hough) also wore gray, but Lord and Lady Montague (David Hudson and Amber Wood) wore black(!) Meanwhile, most of the rest of the brawlers of Team Capulet and Team Montague wore indistinguishable 19th century duds, and sashayed around the stage with cavalry swords strapped to their belts and black-powder rifles with fixed bayonets(!) in their hands. Color-blind casting of the Prince?s kinsman and Romeo?s friend Mercutio (Jade Arnold), Romeo?s friend and confessor Friar Lawrence (Carlos Massey), Juliet?s earthy Nurse (Carly Jones), etc., further confused matters.

But the biggest stumbling-block for this disappointing production was the diction ? Shakespearean diction ? that most of the cast lacked. Even with body mics, few cast members could declaim their lines distinctly. Thick Southern accents ? many of them forced and phony ? chewed up line after glorious line, and spit out mush.

Movie-star-handsome 27-year-old Ira David Wood IV as Romeo made a dreamy Romeo, and demonstrated time and again that the Immortal Bard?s poetry had touched his soul; and the always reliable John Honeycutt and the underutilized Susannah Hough put plenty of personality into their portrayals of the Capulets as Southern sympathizers. But Jade Arnold dulled Mercutio?s waspish wit, Carlos Massey was largely unintelligible as he rattled off Friar Lawrence?s lines, and Carly Jones failed to get her teeth into the meaty role of Juliet?s Nurse.

Ira Wood and Sydney Mitchell demonstrated little chemistry as, perhaps, the most famous pair of lovers on the English stage. And her line readings lacked the lilt of his.

Most of the sword fights looked like the combatants were playing patty cake, and Romeo and Juliet?s extended death scene ? in which the freshly widowed bride had to wrench a bayonet off of a musket to skewer herself ? was not only ludicrous, but painful to watch for those of us who love Shakespeare.

Could pepperoni spoil presidential debate?

(AP) ? During the next presidential debate, the candidates will be pondering the important questions of our time. But the most controversial may be "Sausage or pepperoni?"

Pizza Hut is offering a lifetime of free pizza ? one large pie a week for 30 years ? or a check for $15,600 to anyone who poses the question to either President Barack Obama or Republican candidate Mitt Romney during the live Town Hall-style debate next Tuesday.

The proposed stunt, which the pizza chain announced Tuesday, threatens to tick off millions of viewers who are expected to tune in to the debate to hear what the candidates have to say about the economy, health care and other serious concerns facing this country.

"It's a terrible waste of time for the presidential candidates, the people who organize the debate and everyone who wants to listen," said Mickey Sheridan, a 43--year-old bartender from Queens, N.Y., who is a Pizza Hut fan. "They should find some other way to advertise."

Pizza Hut's move comes as marketers continue to look for new ways to engage TV audiences that increasingly are resistant to their traditional commercials. It's also happening at a time when Americans are paying closer attention to presidential debates. On Oct. 3, an estimated 67.2 million people watched the first debate between Obama and Romney, the largest TV audience for a presidential debate since 1992, according to Nielsen's ratings service.

It's not the first time a question that could be seen as frivolous has been asked of a president or candidate during a live, televised events. One of the most famous moments in TV history came during a 1994 MTV Town Hall when an audience member asked then-President Bill Clinton whether he wore "Boxers or briefs?" Clinton's sheepish response, "Usually briefs," became an indelible moment in pop culture.

But such moments don't always end well. During Obama's 2009 State of the Union address, for instance, South Carolina Congressman Joe Wilson yelled out "You lie, you lie." Wilson quickly apologized but was widely criticized by members of both parties for the breach of decorum.

"I think people are frustrated with the political process, but they don't want it to become a zoo," said Allen Adamson, managing director of branding firm Landor Associates in New York.

It can be even more difficult for marketers to get away with such outbursts. While companies long have used hot political topics to gain publicity for their brands, it can backfire. For example, there was backlash in February 2011 when Kenneth Cole compared the Arab Spring uprisings to a frenzy over the U.S. designer's spring collection. The company later apologized.

"Context really matters," said Deborah Mitchell, Clinical Professor of Marketing at Ohio State University. "Political satire is fine if it's in the context of where people are expecting it. When context is violated that's when you run into trouble."

Even if Pizza Hut's stunt doesn't turn off viewers, Laura Ries, president of Atlanta-based brand strategy firm Ries and Ries, said it still will likely fail. That's because it does not substantially connect back to the Pizza Hut brand.

"The problem is that it's too contrived; it's completely made up," she said. "For something to move past silly gimmick and become more successful brand connection, it does have to have some sort of relevance."

To its critics, Pizza Hut, a unit of Louisville, Ky.-based Yum Brands Inc., said there is room for both serious and lighthearted questions in the debate, which will be broadcast on most network and cable news stations.

"We know there are a lot of serious topics that are going to be debated and need to be debated," Pizza Hut spokesman Doug Terfehr said.

But Terfehr said the pizza chain, which operates 10,000 restaurants in 90 countries, saw this as a way to ask an "everyday question" that people can relate to. "Pizza seems to be a question everyone understands."

John Dunn, 51, a manager of a data center from North Carolina, said Pizza Hut's question is one that should not be asked during the presidential debate. "This election means a lot to me," he said. "I'd rather ask them a more important question if I actually had the opportunity to ask a presidential candidate a question."

To be sure, because of rules governing the debate, Pizza's Hut stunt may not even be possible. The first Town Hall-style presidential debate was in 1992 and there were not many rules, which made for a lively debate, says Alan Schroeder, a professor of journalism at Northeastern University and author of "Presidential Debates: 50 Years of High-Risk TV."

But since then, campaigns have added many restrictions in their negotiations in the way audience members can ask questions. The terms for this year haven't been made public, but in the past, Schroeder notes that audience members have had to arrive early and write out their questions on notecards, with the moderator selecting among the questions that got the green light.

Even if someone attempts to ask the "Sausage or pepperoni?" question, it's likely they would get immediately shut down. That's because in 2004, campaigns negotiated a rule that an audience member's microphone would be cut off if they start to veer from pre-determined questions.

In any case, Schroeder, the journalism professor, said he doesn't think anyone who makes it into the debate audience will dare pose the question to the candidates.

"It's so unseemly, for a lifetime of free pizzas, to make a fool out of themselves in front of millions of people," he said. "They'd have to give a partial ownership of the company for that."

Can You Catch Meningitis?

Some forms of meningitis are contagious, but fungal meningitis ? the type responsible for the recent outbreak ? is not.

So far, 105 people have been affected by the fungal meningitis outbreak, which is linked to contaminated steroid injections.

Meningitis is a swelling or inflammation of the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord (which are called the meninges). A number of things can cause meningitis, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. [See: 5 Meningitis Facts You Need to Know]

When meningitis is caused by a virus or bacteria ? as is most common ? it can spread from person to person. Bacterial meningitis can spread through kissing, and viral meningitis can spread when people come in contact with the feces of an infected person, which can happen when changing a diaper, or when a person does not properly wash their hands after using the toilet, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Other causes of meningitis are not contagious. For example, meningitis can be caused by head injuries, brain surgery and some cancers, the CDC says.

Meningitis that is caused by fungi is not contagious. The people sickened in the recent fungal meningitis outbreak are thought to have become infected when they were injected with a steroid drug that was contaminated with fungus. Injections were delivered into their spines ? allowing the fungus to enter their spinal fluid and spread to their brain.

The types of fungi involved in the outbreak, such as Aspergillus, are common in the environment, and usually don't cause problems in healthy people.

The number of cases in the fungal meningitis outbreak is still going up because some people who received the contaminated injections before they were recalled by the manufacturer could still develop symptoms ? they can take up to four weeks to appear. In other cases, people may have fallen sick sometime in the past several months after receiving an injection, but doctors are now better able to identify the cause of their illnesses.

Pass it on: Fungal meningitis cannot spread from person to person.

A white mouse

Monday, October 8, 2012

These proteins are required for melanocyte stem cell self-maintenance and, as such, correct pigmentation throughout the mice's life span. Without these two proteins, the mice's fur turns white. Their research is published in the review 'Cell Report' and paves the way for serious possibilities in terms of stopping the formation of melanomas, tumours that originate from melanocyte cells.

Melanocytes are cells in the organism used for skin, fur and hair pigment. This pigmentation function provides protection from the sun and lends organisms their colour. Malfunctions in these cells may lead to skin cancer known as melanoma. Melanomas are highly aggressive cancers that become very difficult to treat as they develop and metastases occur.

A few years ago, researchers discovered that, in humans, the B-Raf gene (coding gene for protein of the same name) is mutated in more than 50% of melanoma. Spectacular progress has been made in recent years in the treatment of this cancer, thanks to the development of pharmacological inhibitors that target an enzyme: the B-Raf kinase. However, despite this treatment, cancer returns in several patients, indicating that not all cancerous cells have been eliminated. This led researchers to believe that B-Raf is not the only element driving the cancer process.

In this new research, scientists have tried to understand how melanocytes function normally, to then understand their specific role in cancer. To this end B-Raf protein expression, then, in turn, C-Raf protein expression, were removed from mice with black fur (ideal to clearly see any changes in pigmentation).

No changes in pigmentation were observed for mice that only had their B-Raf or C-Raf expression removed by researchers from the line of cells producing melanocytes. Mice that had both coding genes for B-Raf and C-Raf removed simultaneously had a normal colour at birth. However, they progressively lost their pigmentation as they grew. They turned grey from black, before becoming increasingly white.

For Alain Eych?ne, the research team leader, "these observations represent a fault in melanocyte renewal. Since the colour black is present at birth, the pigment cells clearly exist. However, the progressive whitening of the fur, once B-Raf and C-Raf have been removed from the cell line, proves that both these proteins are required for melanocyte renewal".

As is the case for all cells, melanocytes originate from stem cells; the latter are responsible for renewal during moulting. This research shows that it is specifically this population of stem cells alone that disappears progressively in mutant mice. For Alain Eych?ne, "This is the first in vivo demonstration of the role of RAF proteins in the self-renewal of stem cells".

The fact that B-Raf and C-Raf are both involved in controlling and renewing pigment stem cells represents another step towards understanding and treating melanoma. By blocking these proteins (using inhibitors) in patients undergoing treatment, it is possible that in time researchers will succeed in eliminating all cancerous stem cells, i.e. the likely cause behind cases of cancer reoccurrence.

Tehran's Grand Bazaar reopens, currency trade still frozen

DUBAI (Reuters) - Tehran's Grand Bazaar reopened under close police supervision on Saturday, traders said, days after it was shut by clashes between riot police and protesters blaming the government for the collapse of the Iranian currency.

Iran's government remained locked in a test of wills with currency dealers as it tried unsuccessfully to impose a stronger exchange rate for the rial, which lost about a third of its value in 10 days.

Merchants in the bazaar, one of the capital's main shopping areas, said uncertainty over whether authorities could stabilize the currency was making business planning difficult.

"The dominant thing on every merchant's mind is concern for tomorrow," one shop owner told Reuters by telephone, declining to be named because of the political sensitivity of speaking to foreign media.

On Wednesday, riot police fired tear gas, fought demonstrators and arrested money changers in and around the bazaar. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad blamed speculators for the rial's slide, which is eating into living standards and destroying jobs in the industrial sector.

The involvement of the Grand Bazaar in the protests is politically significant because merchants from the area were key supporters of Iran's Islamic revolution in 1979. Some traders said they shut their shops this week as part of the protests, while others cited fears over their safety.

The rial has been undermined by Western sanctions against Iran over its disputed nuclear programme, but many Iranians also blame economic mismanagement by Ahmadinejad's administration.

After the protests, most free market trade of the rial in Tehran and Dubai, a major center for business with Iran, ground to a halt because dealers feared being targeted by police for quoting rates that displeased the government, and because of the huge financial risks of trading such a volatile currency.

MARKET FROZEN

Authorities attempted to revive trade on Saturday by dictating a rate. The Iranian Money Changers Association, a state-licensed body, instructed its members to sell dollars at 28,500 rials, Mehr news agency quoted a trader as saying. That was much stronger than the record low of 37,500 early this week.

But dealers in Tehran and Dubai told Reuters there was almost no trade because the rates indicated by state bodies were not commonly accepted in the market.

Money changers in Tehran "tell us not even to call them to ask the price of currency. They say they are not giving rates," a merchant in the capital said.

The website of SarafiJalali.com, a Tehran-based money changer, said that to comply with the policies of the central bank, it had stopped announcing rates. The firm said it hoped to resume quoting the rial in the future with the permission of the central bank, but did not elaborate.

If the currency market stays frozen, many Iranians may become unable to conduct businesses that involve imports, while foreign travel and study abroad may be curtailed. This could increase discontent with the government.

Some analysts believe that despite the sanctions, which have slashed Iran's oil earnings, the government still has enough foreign currency to flood the free market with dollars and engineer a sharp rebound of the rial if it chooses.

At the end of last year, Iran's official foreign reserves totaled $106 billion, according to the International Monetary Fund. Analysts estimate reserves may now have dropped by several tens of billions of dollars, but that would still allow Iran to pay for roughly a year of merchandise imports.

So far however, the central bank has been unwilling to release large amounts of dollars into the market to support the rial. Instead, authorities have been rationing hard currency through official channels such as a new foreign exchange center, which was set up last month to serve importers of basic goods.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta on Saturday said the international community will impose more economic sanctions on Iran if the country does not resolve concerns over its nuclear programme. The West accuses Iran of developing nuclear weapons. Iran says its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes.

Existing sanctions "are having a significant impact on the economy in Iran, as evidenced by some of the demonstrations that have taken place within the last few days," Panetta told a news conference in Lima with Peru's defense minister.

"The United States will continue to work with the other countries in the international community to see if additional steps need to be taken," Panetta added.

HIGH INFLATION

Ordinary Iranians have rushed to convert their savings into dollars to escape the rial's depreciation and avoid high inflation, which the government says is running at about 25 percent but private economists put much higher.

Although staple foods and basic consumer goods produced domestically are still generally available, the volatility of the rial and prices has in the past few weeks begun to make some foreign products unavailable, Tehran residents told Reuters.

A seller of imported personal computer equipment told Reuters by phone he had halted sales because he could no longer calculate what his products were worth in rials.

In a report to the U.N. General Assembly that was released on Friday, U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon said the sanctions were having a "significant" effect on Iran's people and also seemed to be harming humanitarian operations in the country.

Unless Iran allows more international monitoring of its nuclear programme, its economic pain looks unlikely to prompt Western governments to ease the sanctions, and it may even encourage them to take further steps.

U.S. lawmakers are considering expanding American economic sanctions on Iran. Democratic Senator Robert Menendez, a member of the Senate Banking and Foreign Relations Committees, said he plans to push for new penalties on foreign banks that handle any significant transactions with Iran's central bank. Only oil-related transactions are now covered by sanctions.

The European Union also has begun discussing the possibility of a broad trade embargo against Iran, moving beyond the energy, business and financial restrictions imposed so far. (Reporting by Marcus George and Yeganeh Torbati in Dubai, and Zahra Hosseinian in Zurich; Editing by Jon Hemming)

Energy Transfer Partners Closes $5.5 Billion Deal With Sunoco ...

I recall hearing about this, but it didn?t resonate until I saw it in Bloomberg: Our Energy Transfer Partners, as in Kelcy Warren and his son Klyde, who has a downtown Dallas park named after him, now heads a dang big company that includes more pipeline than Larry Ellison has homes. Energy Transfer Partners has acquired Sunoco Inc. in a complex cash and shares deal. All I know is I grew up in Illinois and used to buy a whole lot of Sunoco gas, and they once had these green inflatable?dinosaurs?we all got for free ? this when they were so nice to you at gas stations. I know I?m dating myself here, but once upon a time, boys and girls, gas stations gave great service for your business. They pumped gas and gave you big green plastic dinosaurs for your swimming pools. Anyhow, Energy Transfer now owns the place, old plastic dinosaurs and all.

So what does this have to do with real estate? Kelcy might be shopping for more real estate. He already owns one of the most prestigious homes in Dallas,?26,620 square feet set on almost 9 acres of land in the honeypot of Old Preston Hollow. 5323 Park Lane was constructed circa 1991-1993 by a dream team including architect Cole Smith, Smith/Ekblad & Associates, Sherry Hayslip-Smith, Hayslip Design Associates and Cole Smith, Jr., Crowbar Contractors for Joyce and Larry Lacerte. At the time of sale, it contained a racquetball court, exercise room and locker rooms adjacent to a near Olympic-sized natatorium, bowling alley, wine cellar with tasting room, an Orangerie conservatory overlooking interlocking Koi ponds loaded with about a million dollars worth of Koi, tennis court, baseball diamond and a private lake.?Dave Perry-Miller (Ebby Halliday) agent Ralph Randall represented?the Lacerte family. Mr. Warren added a private, secret?music studio hidden off a shoe rack in the spacious master closet. It is designed to be soundproof so he can practice away, and BTW that closet is the size of most apartments.

5323 Park Lane was originally listed in 2008?for $45 million, then?lowered to just under $40 million as the nation?s real estate bubble went bust. According to my sources, it sold for about $29 million-ish, and sharp Kelsey even asked for an outside appraisal. (Imagine what he did to Sunoco!) His buyer?s agent was Rosie Waters of Allie Beth Allman and Associates, who is married to football legend Charlie Waters, who?works for Mr. Warren.

As if that isn?t enough, in 2010 Mr. Warren?paid $46.5 million for a 3,500 acre ranch in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, near Telluride:?Bootjack Ranch. 14,000 square feet, 27 bedrooms, 29 bathrooms, four half baths, according to Sotheby?s. But that?s not all. It has miles of river ? great fishing ? lakes and an 82-foot long pool, a 12,000 square foot glass lodge spa and aquatic center complete with retractable roof for ?spa activities.? (Gotta have fresh air for yoga, right?). The dining room light-fixture is in the shape of a canoe. All together, there are 77,000 square feet of interiors, plenty of room to entertain 50 or an army.?Mr. Warren also owns an entire island off the coast of Roatan, Honduras where he is building an amazing private retreat. And he?s a great negotiator: Bootjack ranch, which was owned by a San Francisco Bay-area developer and his wife, was originally listed for $88 million. We were lucky enough to fly by private jet to Crested Butte a few summers ago, and there was Mr. Warren?s private jet right there just waiting for him.

Deadly meningitis outbreak increases to 91 cases

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Reuters) - U.S. health officials on Sunday reported an additional 27 cases in a fungal meningitis outbreak linked to steroid injections that has killed seven people and now infected 91 in nine states.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported the new total of 91 cases in an update on its website, up from 64 on Saturday. Most of the new cases were reported in Michigan, where the total increased to 20 from eight. Virginia's total increased to 18 from 11.

The widening outbreak has alarmed U.S. health officials and focused attention on regulations of pharmaceutical compounding companies like the one that produced the drugs, the New England Compounding Center Inc in Framingham, Massachusetts.

The company shipped 17,676 vials of the steroid methylprednisolone acetate to 76 facilities in 23 states from July through September, the Massachusetts Health Department said.

The steroid is used as a painkiller, usually for the back, and could have been injected in thousands of patients, authorities have said.

Meningitis is an infection of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, and affected patients started showing a variety of symptoms from one to four weeks after their injections.

The company, which was previously the subject of complaints, has suspended its operations while an investigation proceeds and earlier recalled the three lots of the drug. It expanded its recall on Saturday to all products compounded and distributed at its Framingham facility.

According to an announcement on its website, the company issued the broader recall out of "an abundance of caution" because of the "potential risk of contamination."

A compounding pharmacy takes medications from pharmaceuticals manufacturers and makes them into specific dosages and strengths for use by doctors.

Complaints against the company in 2002 and 2003 about the processing of medication resulted in an agreement with government agencies in 2006 to correct deficiencies, the Massachusetts Health Department said.

LIMITED FDA AUTHORITY

In 2011, there was another inspection of the facility and no deficiencies were found. In March 2012, another complaint was made about the potency of a product used in eye surgery procedures. That investigation is continuing, the state health department said.

The U.S. Food and Drug administration has limited authority over the day-to-day operations of compounding pharmacies, which are regulated primarily by state boards that oversee the practices, licensing and certification of pharmacies and pharmacists.

Compounded products do not have to win FDA approval before they are sold, and the agency has no jurisdiction over how the products are manufactured or labeled for use. Instead, the FDA investigates cases of adulterated drugs in cooperation with state regulators.

The FDA has tried to exert greater authority over compounded drug products under a section of the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act that covers new drugs. But those efforts led to federal court challenges that resulted in two separate and conflicting rulings at the appellate level.

The nine states where fungal meningitis cases have been reported are Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee and Virginia.

Michigan had 20 cases and two deaths. One person died in Maryland and another in Virginia, the CDC said.

Reuters had reported 65 cases on Saturday, including one additional case after the CDC published its total.

Fungal meningitis is not contagious, the CDC said. Symptoms include fever, headache, nausea and neurological problems that would be consistent with deep brain stroke.
