CNN behind on TV ratings, ahead of rivals online (Reuters)

NEW YORK, Jan 26 (TheWrap.com) ? CNN may lag behind most of its competitors in the television ratings department, but digital is another story.

Citing comScore Media Metrix, CNN said in a blog post that it drew more than 73 million unique visitors across all platforms in 2011, while more than 100 million videos were started on its website.

And what would those numbers mean without a little dig at the competition?

According to CNN, those 73 million unique visitors outpace its main rivals in the TV news space, "beating MSNBC by 38 percent, Fox News by 187 percent, ABC News Digital by 217 percent and CBS Interactive by 260 percent."

If one goes by page views, those percentages balloon even more.

Oddly enough, those numbers might be inversely proportional to television ratings as MSNBC topped CNN in 2011, Fox beat both and the networks outpaced cable.

CNN also claims to be the top destination for mobile news, with 19.5 million unique visitors per month, and the most popular on both Facebook and Twitter.

On mobile and Facebook, Fox News is its closest competitor. On Twitter, it's the New York Times.

33 whales shot in New Zealand after rescues failed

(AP) ? Conservation staff in New Zealand have put down 33 stranded whales after several attempts to refloat them failed.

The pilot whales shot Thursday were the last of 99 that stranded themselves Monday on Farewell Spit on the South Island. Department of Conservation area manager John Mason says staff and hundreds of volunteers had tried all week to get the whales refloated.

He says they thought they were successful Wednesday when they got the whales into deep water ? but were saddened Thursday to find that they had swum back ashore. He says the condition of the whales had significantly deteriorated.

As well as the 33 whales that were shot, 36 had died naturally since Monday and 17 were successfully refloated. Thirteen remain unaccounted for.

US official: SEAL team in rescue also killed Osama

(AP) ? A U.S. official says the Navy SEAL team that rescued two hostages in Somalia was the same unit that killed Osama bin Laden.

SEAL Team Six parachuted into Somalia under cover of darkness Wednesday and rescued an American woman and a Danish man from an outdoor camp where they were being held by Somali pirates, the official said.

The same team executed the mission last May in which al-Qaida leader bin Laden was killed.

The U.S. official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the top secret operation.

Steps You Should Take to Get Insurance ? Centired.com - For All ...

As young people grow up and start their own lives, they need to buy new things. Buying things can lead to having to buy insurance. If you buy a car, you will need to also buy auto insurance. If you buy a house, you will need to buy insurance. If you get married or have children, you will want to consider life insurance. There are all kinds of different insurance that we must all deal with in our lives. Finding a good deal on insurance from good insurance companies can be a challenge. It can get confusing, too, with all the different insurance coverage types and insurance companies and insurance policies. A lot of people are upset at how high the cost of insurance policies are. All insurance, though, can turn out to be an incredible and invaluable investment when accidents and losses happen. Insurance is something very important to invest in. Although insurance can be an expensive business, there are several things you can do to get the best deal on insurance and ensure you get the coverage you want in addition.

What insurance will do is protect you financially when accidents and losses occur. Having insurance is like a guarantee that you will receive some kind of financial compensation to help you through your problem. For example, if you get into a car accident, it is no secret that car repairs are extremely costly. If your car is insured, though, your car insurance company will pay for you to get your car fixed. If you buy a house and it floods, home insurance with flood coverage will pay for the damages caused by the flood.

When you are considering buying a car, you should know that it is a law to have car insurance. There are dozens and dozens of insurance companies out there that offer car insurance with all different types of coverage on your car. What you can do to find the best deal on auto insurance is to call around to various insurance companies that offer car insurance and ask for an insurance quote. An insurance quote is kind of like an estimate on the cost of what you will be spending on the insurance for a certain coverage. All you must do is supply that insurance company with some basic information about yourself and they can give you a price estimate, or an insurance quote, on your car and the coverage you want. Once you have gathered a few quotes from different companies, as long as they all support the services that you need, you will have the lowest costing insurance available right in front of you.

When you have chosen to go with a certain insurance company, you should ask about their insurance bundles. A lot of insurance companies will offer to give you car insurance, home insurance, and life insurance all through them. And since you are purchasing all of this insurance through one company, they will give you a discount. This is much better and more organized than purchasing insurance from three different insurance company.

Any insurance, whether it be car insurance, life insurance, liability insurance, or health insurance, will cost you per month. Every month you will pay an amount that guarantees you will be protected financially if you were to be in an accident or experienced losses. Steps You Should Take to Get Insurance

It's guys, not ladies, who splurge on lunch

Getty Images / Getty Images file

A man eats his lunch at a Burger King in London.

By Allison Linn

The next time you stop in for a morning latte or head out for a restaurant lunch, take a look around ? and don?t be surprised if you see a lot of young men standing in line.

A new survey of workers finds that men spend significantly more on coffee and lunch than women.

The survey, from staffing firm Accounting Principals, also found that younger workers spend more than older workers on lunch and coffee during the workday.

Overall, those lunches out and coffee breaks are costing workers a bundle.? American workers who buy coffee and lunch spend an average of $1,000 a year on coffee and $2,000 a year on lunch, based on the survey of 1,000 workers.

About two-thirds of workers buy lunch and half buy coffee during the week.

Men were slightly more likely than women to go out to eat, but they spent a lot more. The men who buy their lunches spend an average of $46.30 on lunch each week, compared with $26.50 for women who go out to eat.

Men who buy coffee spend an average of $25.70 vs. $15 for women.

The caffeine fix is a bigger hit on the wallets of 18- to 34-year-old workers. Younger workers who buy coffee spend an average of $24.74 a week on coffee, compared with $14.15 for workers 45 and older who buy coffee during the work week. Younger workers also spend far more on lunch than older workers: about $45 a week vs. $32.

Not surprisingly, a third of those surveyed said one of their goals for 2012 was to bring their own lunch more often.

Accounting Principals, a unit of Adecco, commissioned the survey in December.

Tip of the hat to Consumerist, which first reported on the study.

La. seafood board may buy N.O. arena naming rights (AP)

NEW ORLEANS ? The Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board says it may use some of the $30 million it received from BP PLC after the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill to buy naming rights for the New Orleans Arena, where the NBA's Hornets play.

Executive director Ewell Smith said Tuesday the promotional value would be part of a campaign to restore confidence in Gulf seafood. Many seafood grounds were closed during the spill.

Smith said the campaign could include setting up Louisiana seafood vendor booths at other NBA arenas around the country.

He said the board has spoken with the Hornets and is awaiting more information. The arena is state-owned. A deal, he said, could come within 90 days.

The naming rights proposal was first reported in The Courier of Houma.

Billionaire gives $5 million to pro-Gingrich group

(AP) ? A Las Vegas billionaire has contributed $5 million to an independent group backing Newt Gingrich, breathing new life into the former House Speaker's struggling campaign for the GOP presidential nomination and casting renewed attention on the role of such groups in the 2012 contest.

A person familiar with the development said Sheldon Adelson, a casino mogul and longtime donor to Republican candidates, made the contribution Friday to Winning Our Future, a super PAC run by Gingrich allies. The person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity and was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly, said Adelson is expected to contribute as much or more to the candidate who eventually wins the Republican nomination, be it Gingrich or one of his rivals.

Rick Tyler, a former top Gingrich strategist and spokesman for Winning Our Future, declined to comment on the donation, which was first reported by The Washington Post. Politico reported last month that Adelson was prepared to spend $20 million to help Gingrich.

A 2010 Supreme Court decision easing restrictions on corporate and individual spending laid the groundwork for these political action committees, or super PACs, which can raise and spend unlimited amounts of money to influence elections as long as they do not coordinate directly with a candidate's campaign. The identities of those who contributed to super PACs in the second half of 2011 won't be reported until the end of January.

Republican-leaning super PACs played a significant role in the 2010 midterm elections, helping deliver the House to the GOP and boost the number of Republicans in the Senate. The 2012 contest is the first to test the influence of such groups in presidential politics.

No candidate has seen his fortunes affected by the emergence of super PACs more than Gingrich.

Riding high in polls just a month ago, he became the target of a $3 million advertising barrage sponsored by Restore Our Future, a super PAC supporting Mitt Romney run by several of the former Massachusetts governor's allies. The ads, which pounded Gingrich for his ties to federal housing giant Freddie Mac and his reversal on issues like climate change, sent his political fortunes plunging in Iowa. Gingrich finished fourth in the state's caucuses last week.

Gingrich has vowed to carry on and is hoping to resuscitate his campaign in South Carolina, which holds its primary January 21. Since Romney is heavily favored to win the New Hampshire primary Tuesday, his rivals are looking to slow his momentum when the contest moves south.

Several super PACs have already played a role in the Republican campaign. They include Make Us Great Again, a super PAC backing Texas Gov. Rick Perry; Our Destiny, supporting former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman; and the Red White and Blue Fund, which helped revive Rick Santorum's campaign in Iowa and is running ads in South Carolina.

Priorities USA Action, a super PAC backing President Barack Obama's re-election campaign, has spent modestly during the Republican nominating contest and is expected to step up its role in the general election.
