Thieves with an arty eye: Heists over the years

(AP) ? A Rotterdam museum art heist this week netted paintings by Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet, Henri Matisse and others ? but it's not the first time that money-conscious thieves with an eye for beauty have targeted famous multimillion-dollar canvasses. Here's a look at some top art heists over the decades:

MIDNIGHT IN PARIS

In May 2010, in the small hours of the morning at Paris' Museum of Modern Art, a masked intruder made it look as easy as 1-2-3. Taking advantage of a broken alarm system, the thief clipped a padlock, smashed a window and stole a Picasso, a Matisse and three other masterpieces worth $123 million. Fifteen minutes later, the intruder slipped back into the night unnoticed, leaving behind nothing except empty frames. Though his movements were caught on one of the museum's functioning cameras, the three security guards on duty overnight said they "saw nothing." The case remains unsolved.

SWISS JOB

Zurich police called it an "entirely new dimension in criminal culture." In February 2008, three men, wearing ski masks and dark clothing, entered the Buehrle museum a half-hour before closing on a Sunday. While one used a pistol to force museum personnel to the floor, the two others went and collected four paintings by Cezanne, Degas, van Gogh and Monet worth $163 million. Shocked police called it one of the biggest heists in European history. Luckily, the van Gogh and Monet paintings were recovered in 2006.

BROAD DAYLIGHT

In August 2004, two Edvard Munch masterpieces, "The Scream" and "Madonna," were stolen from the Munch Museum in Oslo, Norway, by three men wielding firearms in a daylight raid. The thieves forced the museum guards to lie down on the floor while they stole off with the works and escaped in a car, which police later found abandoned. The paintings, insured for $141 million, were recovered with little damage two years later.

APPEARANCES ARE DECEPTIVE

In March 1990, two thieves dressed in police uniform fooled staff at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston to pull off the biggest art theft in U.S. history. The pair gained entry at night by posing as Boston police officers and stating that they were responding to an emergency call. Once inside, the thieves handcuffed the two security guards and took them into the basement, where they were secured to pipes and their hands, feet, and heads duct-taped. The thieves made off with some $300 million in art, including works by Dutch masters Vermeer, Rembrandt and French painter Manet. The paintings remain missing. Now, 22 years on, the Gardner robbery remains the largest single property theft of all time.

MONA LISA AIN'T SMILING

It's a heist that helped create the celebrity status that Mona Lisa wields to this day. In August 1911, Leonardo da Vinci's enigmatic masterpiece was taken ? brazenly ? from Paris' Louvre museum. Pablo Picasso was among those detained and taken in for questioning by investigating police. The Louvre mourned as it thought the painting had been lost forever. It took two years to discover the real thief: art historians say a Louvre employee called Vincenzo Peruggia had stolen it by entering the building during regular hours, hiding in a broom closet and walking out with it hidden under his coat when the Louvre had closed for the day.

moinakelly: Reference and Education: Government Grants Within ...

The United States of America is a nation full of natural riches, from rain forests, rivers, lakes, oceans, desserts, and whatnot. If sustained, supported, and consolidated properly, these natural resources can turn into economical and industrial behemoths that can serve the people environmentally and financially.

For this reason, the United States Government has developed a slew of agencies that are established solely to render concerns related to the country's natural resources.

The United States Forest Service, one of the agencies in the natural resources sector, is an agency operating under the United States Department of Agriculture that administers the nation's 155 national forests and 20 national grasslands, which encompass 193 million acres of land.

The mission of the agency is "to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the Nation's forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations."

The agency is divided into three primary divisions, the National Forest System, State and Private Forestry, and the Research and Development branch. The agency carries out its mission by establishing grant programs such as the Collaborative Forest Restoration Program, which was generally intended to encourage individuals, businesses, groups and other organizations to collaborate on the design, implementation, and monitoring of projects that value local and traditional knowledge, promote healthy and productive forests and watersheds, and build ownership and civic pride.

The National Park Service, on the other hand, is a United States federal agency that manages manages all national parks, various national monuments, and other conservation and historical properties with various title designations.

The grants and programs of the National Park service are all geared towards the achievement of its primary agency mission which is to "provide quality law enforcement to safeguard lives, protect our national treasures and symbols of democracy, and preserve the natural and cultural resources entrusted to us."

Meanwhile, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, operating within the United States Department of the Interior, is the primary agency dedicated to the management of fish, wildlife, and natural habitats.

The mission of the agency, which is "to conserve, protect, and enhance fish, wildlife, plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people", is carried out by creating several grants and initiatives that serve this purpose.

One of these grant programs is the Evaluation of Mixed-grass Prairie Biotic Communities Project, which was developed to assist with research study design, statistical analyses, data assimilation, and development of written scientific manuscript or report regarding the present situation of mixed-grass prairie biotic communities.

Space station investigation to test fresh food experience

ScienceDaily (Oct. 16, 2012) ? With all the prepackaged gardening kits on the market, an exceptionally green thumb isn't necessary to grow your own tasty fresh vegetables here on Earth. The same may hold true for U.S. astronauts living and working aboard the International Space Station when they receive a newly developed Vegetable Production System, called VEGGIE for short, set to launch aboard SpaceX's Dragon capsule on NASA's third Commercial Resupply Services mission next year.

"Our hope is that even though VEGGIE is not a highly complex plant growth apparatus, it will allow the crew to rapidly grow vegetables using a fairly simple nutrient and water delivery approach," said Howard Levine, Ph.D. and chief scientist, NASA's Kennedy Space Center International Space Station Research Office.

Gioia Massa, a postdoctoral fellow in the Surface Systems Group of Kennedy's Engineering Directorate, has been working with the International Space Station Research Office to validate the VEGGIE hardware here on Earth before it takes flight next year.

"VEGGIE could be used to produce faster-growing species of plants, such as lettuce or radishes, bok choy or Chinese cabbage, or even bitter leafy greens" Massa said. "Crops like tomatoes, peas or beans in which you'd have to have a flower and set fruit would take a little longer than a 28-day cycle."

It may not sound like a big deal to us Earthlings who can just run out to our local produce stand or supermarket when we have a hankering for a salad, but when you're living 200 miles above the surface of the planet, truly fresh food only comes a few times a year.

"When the resupply ships get up there, the fresh produce gets eaten almost immediately," Massa said.

Weighing in at about 15 pounds and taking up the space of a stove-top microwave oven, the stowable and deployable VEGGIE system was built by Orbital Technologies Corporation, or ORBITEC, in Madison, Wis. The company designed the system to enable low-maintenance experiments, giving astronauts the opportunity to garden recreationally.

"Based upon anecdotal evidence, crews report that having plants around was very comforting and helped them feel less out of touch with Earth," Massa said. "You could also think of plants as pets. The crew just likes to nurture them."

In simple terms, the VEGGIE system works like this: Clear Teflon bellows that can be adjusted for plants as they grow are attached to a metal frame housing the system's power and light switches. A rooting pillow made of Teflon-coated Kevlar and Nomex will contain the planting media, such as soil or claylike particles, along with fertilizer pellets. Seeds either will be preloaded in the pillows on Earth or inserted by astronauts in space. To water the plants, crew members will use a reservoir located beneath the pillows and a root mat to effectively add moisture through an automatic wicking process.

VEGGIE is set to join other plant growth facilities that vary in size and complexity, such as the Lada greenhouse unit and the ABRS, short for Advanced Biological Research System. VEGGIE is the simplest of the three designs, but has the largest surface area for planting and is expected to produce data on a more regular basis. Levine noted that the ability to grow plants in microgravity has really evolved throughout the past decade.

"What's interesting is that plants breathe, just like humans," Levine said. "Initially, biologists tried to grow plants in sealed compartments but that didn't work because without continuous airflow bringing carbon dioxide and oxygen to plants for respiration, they won't thrive."

An added benefit of the VEGGIE system is that it requires only about 115 watts to operate, less than half the energy it takes to power a desktop computer and monitor. The blue, red and green light-emitting diodes, or LEDs, are bright enough for crops to grow, but energy efficient enough for a place where power is at a premium.

"We really only need the red and the blue LEDs for good photosynthesis, but we have the option of turning the green LEDs on, which will make the overall light look white, making the plants look green rather than purple," Massa said.

Once the facility reaches the station, astronauts will unpack it and install it into one of the station's EXPRESS racks. Then, they'll report back to Kennedy's International Space Station Research Office about the setup and work that goes into planting, maintaining and harvesting the crops, as well as the effort that goes into pillow disposal and sanitation.

Mary Hummerick, a microbiologist at Kennedy, will be awaiting swab samples and frozen plant tissues to return from space so she can analyze them for bacteria and microorganisms that could adversely affect the crew. If those numbers are acceptable, NASA could give the go-ahead for crews to start eating what they grow.

NASA is looking into other ways to use the VEGGIE facility once its operation is validated on the first flight to the station.

"You could have bio-behavioral studies on the effect of growing edible plants compared to ornamental plants with flowers, nutritional studies, psychological studies, or you could grow herbs like mint and basil," Massa said.

The agency recently released a NASA Research Announcement asking for those types of proposals from peer-reviewed researchers to join in with their own VEGGIE experiments. Prospective researchers also will have to detail their plans for involving students in K-12 classrooms and how their experiments would help teach kids about science, technology, math and engineering, or STEM.

"There's definitely an outreach component to VEGGIE and we're looking at reaching the up-and-coming generation with STEM activities," said Levine. "We're leaving it up to the researchers to propose how to engage and enthuse a significant number of students with their experiments."

While a successful run of VEGGIE would open innumerable possibilities for future experiments, the near-term goal will be seeing whether the hardware performs as expected on the station come next year.

2012 NCAA Hockey scores: Colorado College opens season with two straight wins

The Colorado College Tigers won both of their non conference games in the opening weekend of play, while Air Force had to settle for two straight ties in Alaska.

College hockey season kicked off for both the Air Force Falcons and the Colorado College Tigers over the weekend, with the Tigers getting the bigger share of the spoils in non-conference play. The Tigers picked up two wins, while the Falcons had to settle with two ties in Alaska.

Here are the weekend results for the Tigers and Falcons:

Saturday, Oct. 13

Colorado College 5, Clarkson 4
Tigers coach Scott Owens earned his 300th career win thanks to five early goals that kept Clarkson out of the game late. Up 5-1 with 15 minutes remaining in the game, the Golden Knights staged a furious late comeback but didn't have enough time to finish the game off.

Alaska 3, Air Force 3
After a four-goal first period, the first game of the Kendall Hockey Classic in Anchorage quickly dried up for Air Force and Alaska. Nik Yaremchuk and Chad Demers traded goals in the second and third periods, respectively, but neither team could force anything in overtime and the game ended in a 3-3 tie.

Sunday, Oct. 14

Colorado College 5, Clarkson 4
Following the example of the Golden Knights the night before, the Tigers staged a late comeback in the second game of their series in Colorado Springs. Unlike Clarkson's comeback, the Tigers' was successful and a William Rapuzzi goal with one minute left gave the Tigers the sweep.

Alaska-Anchorage 3, Air Force 3
Air Force's second game at Sullivan Arena over the weekend ended with the same result as the first. The Falcons jumped into an early 2-0 lead in the first period, but allowed Alaska-Anchorage to score three straight before tieing it up in the third period. Again, overtime led to nothing and the two teams finished level.

The Denver Pioneers did not play and will have their first game of the season next weekend.

Rocks are occasionally blasted off the surface of Mars by cosmic impacts from asteroids. These drift in space, with some crashing down on Earth. Martian rock known to be on Earth is very rare: only about 220 pounds (100 kilograms) worth.

Last July, a swarm of Martian meteorites plunged into the Moroccan desert. These rocks, named?Tissint?meteorites after the village they landed near, were the first batch of Martian meteorites to be collected right after observers witnessed their fall. All the other Martian meteorites, many of them recovered from Antarctica, had been gathered well after arrival, during which time degradation and contamination may have obscured secrets they held about Mars.

Within a Tissint meteorite, scientists found an abundance of black glass that they say may contain traces of Mars' surface, atmosphere and interior. This glass preserved key details about Mars.?[Black Glass in New Martian Meteorite (Photos)]?

The black glass resulted from melting, probably caused by the impact that knocked the rock off Mars an estimated 700,000 years ago.

The meteorite is mostly a kind of volcanic rock known as basalt, rich with an olive-green crystal known as olivine. This suggests it once was part of Mars' interior. However, levels of sulfur, fluorine and trace elements such as cesium hint at material from the Martian surface. In addition, the glass contains bubbles of Martian atmosphere.

To explain the presence of the interior, surface and atmosphere of Mars in one meteorite, the researchers suggest the rock's cracks and fissures were infiltrated by fluids washing down from the Red Planet's surface.

"It was really surprising and very exciting to find the evidence of Martian surface alteration in Tissint," lead study author Hasnaa Chennaoui at Hassan II University in Casablanca, Morocco, told SPACE.com. "We didn't expect this result."

The meteorite possesses certain varieties (isotopes) of helium, neon and argon that were likely formed by collisions with the high-energy-charged particles of cosmic rays. The isotopes reveal the rock spent about 700,000 years in space. This makes the Tissint rocks roughly the same age as three-quarters of all known Martian meteorites, suggesting they all got knocked off Mars by the same event.

The scientists detailed their findings online today (Oct. 11) in the journal Science.

National Law School student gangraped

Bangalore: A 21-year-old student of National Law School of India University here was allegedly raped by a eight-member gang inside the adjacent Jnanabharathi campus of Bangalore University, police said on Monday.

The second-year student, staying in the university hostel, in her police complaint said the incident took place when she had gone out with her boy-friend, who works with an IT firm here, on Saturday night.

When they were walking in the wooded area of the campus, the group of inebriated men attacked them and forcibly took them into deep forest, she alleged in her complaint.

The victim said the gang then demanded money from her boyfriend, who told them that he had kept his wallet in his car. After sending him to bring the wallet along with one of its members, the gang sexually assaulted her.

The victim's boy-friend sighted a beat constable as he was nearing the car and approached him for help following which the gang member accompanying him fled from the scene. Though he along with police searched for the girl in the area, they could not find her.

Around midnight the boy-fried got a call from the girl saying the gang had dropped her back near the hostel after raping her.

The complainant was sent to a hospital where she was medically examined, police said, adding that the medical result is awaited. The victim is in stable condition.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Police Siddaramappa said the gang also took valubles like ipod and mobile phones from the girl and her boyfriend.

"No external injuries were found on the girl", he said.?? ?

"While we are questioning the boy, we are also awaiting for the medical report from the hospital, which will give us a correct picture", Siddaramappa said.

Happening Home Improvement: 5 Reasons to ... - Montco Happening

October has arrived, and a brisk one it has been! With winter right around the corner and residents across Montgomery County will be retreating indoors to avoid the biting cold. If your home is lacking adequate insulation (at least 13? and ideally 17? according to ENERGY STAR?), don?t wait until it?s too late.

Below are five reasons to add insulation to your home today:

  • Comfort: Your home is your refuge from the outside world; therefore, you want to maintain a comfortable environment. If the insulation in your home is inadequate, you?ll notice the outside elements creeping into your home and disrupting your comfort. Reliable insulation is the key to keeping your house warm and cozy all winter, and cool in the summer.
  • Savings: You pay the utility companies a lot of money in the winter months to keep your home warm. However, if your home is not sealed and insulated properly, you might as well be throwing your money out the window right along with your heat. Your energy bills will decrease and you?ll have more money in your wallet if you properly insulate your home.? The U.S. Department of Energy publishes an average of 20% savings on heating and cooling bills just by sealing and insulating your home to ENERGY STAR? standards.
  • Noise Control: If you have kids or pets (or both!) chances are there?s a lot of activity occurring in your home ? and therefore, a lot of noise. Add to that factors that are out of your control ? loud neighbors, traffic, construction, etc., and you may find yourself struggling to sleep or get some peace and quiet. By insulating your home, you?re getting the added benefit of a sound barrier, as well.
  • Eco-Friendliness: The more energy that?s needed to heat your house, the higher the toll on the environment because more resources need to be consumed. This winter, give Mother Nature a break. Properly insulating your home will not just save you money, but it will help reduce your carbon imprint.

To find insulation installers in your area, contact Mark Group, 4050 S. 26th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19112, at 215-334-5273.
