ROUTES AFRICA: Tourism Minister Opens Record Regional Event in Seychelles

ROUTES AFRICA: Tourism Minister Opens Record Regional Event in Seychelles

Posted 08/07/2012

The seventh Routes Africa opened yesterday to an engaging and thought-provoking debate on some of the key topics impacting the aviation business in the Continent.? To a packed audience of delegates, discussions focussed on bilateral agreements and barriers to developing flight connectivity within Africa, although a number of issues were addressed.

The Strategy Forum preceded the Welcome Reception, where delegates were able to sample some local hospitality from this year's hosts the Seychelles Tourism Board in partnership with the Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority.? Speaking to The HUB, Alain St Ange, Seychelles' Minister for Tourism and Culture said: ?Seychelles is proud to be hosting Routes Africa and to have this opportunity to facilitate networking between the major players of the airline industry at this prestigious forum.

08072012 Inside Opening Reception

"We live in a highly interconnected world where no organization can afford to be an ?island unto itself? and where the formation of mutually beneficial partnerships and synergies is increasingly the only way to prosper.? Indeed, we are already witnessing the ?Golden Triangle? of cooperation between Airlines, Tourism and Civil Aviation expanding to encompass cruise ships and the development of successful cruise/fly programmes, with all that implies for the future enrichment of our respective tourism industries.

?It is against this backdrop of the necessity for increased regional and international participation that Routes provides an invaluable medium for advancing the interests of the African aviation industry and for cultivating the networks necessary for that industry to flourish across the broadest spectrum of activities.

?As a small island state, Seychelles is acutely aware of the importance of this process and so it is perhaps fitting that on this occasion we are the host of Routes Africa and in a position to act as a catalyst and facilitator.

?it is my hope that? the amazing diversity that Seychelles offer sin terms of its islands, ethnicity and culture will inspire us all to grasp the bigger picture of regional opportunities and potential, new win-win associations to carry us forward into a new era of friendship, collaboration and prosperity.?

Today, will mark the second day of the Strategy Forum and the start of the formal one-to-one meetings and it is worth remembering once again the important role that air services play particularly in a region where limited ground infrastructure means journeys by land can be long and arduous.?

Each of the Routes regional events held to date in 2012 have had record numbers of attendees and as David Stroud, Executive Vice President Routes, UBM Aviation revealed yesterday, this year?s Routes Africa continues this trend with the highest ever number of airline and airport delegates registered to join us in Seychelles this year.? In fact the number of pre-arranged meetings ahead of its opening was up 95 per cent on the figure last year in Bamako, Mali.

?Despite the continuing difficult times within the industry, the importance of developing and preserving air services is still considered paramount for our airports, cities and regions, and this is particularly important for island communities such as the Seychelles and the surrounding Indian Ocean region.? Seychelles continues to explore new avenues to potential markets in new regions as it pursues a policy of diversification in response to the recession in its traditional core markets across Europe,? highlighted the Routes executive.? ?It is for this reason that this year was a particularly good year to bring Routes to the Seychelles.?

Google phasing out 'iGoogle' in latest purge

(AP) ? Google is phasing out a service that allows millions of people to personalize its home page with applications such as weather updates and stock quotes.

The customization service, known as iGoogle, will be turned off in November 2013. The mobile version of iGoogle will be discontinued at the end of this month.

Google Inc. disclosed its plans this week. It's being swept out as part of a periodic housecleaning that has seen Google scrap more than 30 products since co-founder Larry Page became CEO 15 months ago.

Page has been trying to sharpen Google's focus on search, advertising, video, social networking and mobile devices.

The scheduled termination of iGoogle will come eight years after Google first offered the personalization tool. It had been seen as a way to encourage people to return to Google more frequently for information they are interested in. It also encouraged more people to create Google accounts, which made it easier for the company to identify their individual interests.

The climate has changed since iGoogle started as an unbranded personal page in 2005.

These days, many people get weather and other information through applications they install on smartphones and tablet computers. People who use Google's Chrome browser can also access a variety of apps with functions offered by iGoogle.

"The need for iGoogle has eroded over time," Matt Eichner, Google's general manager of global enterprise search, wrote in a Tuesday blog post.

Google said tens of millions of people used iGoogle within its first two years of existence, making it the company's fastest-growing service in early 2007. The company hasn't disclosed more recent figures.

Besides its customization service, Google also is preparing to jettison several other products, including a little-used online video service that the company started before it bought YouTube in 2006 for $1.76 billion.

Google stopped accepting new clips on Google Video in May 2009. Later this summer, Google Video's remaining content will be transferred to YouTube. Google Video users will have until Aug. 20 to delete or transfer their clips to another location.

Dempster extends scoreless streak

By HOWIE RUMBERG

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 3:45 p.m. ET July 8, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) - Ryan Dempster is too busy watching "Swamp People" to see the stories about him being possible trade bait. He's pitching too well, though, to know that he might be in another uniform by the end of the month.

Dempster extended his scoreless innings streak to 27 in his first start in three weeks, Starlin Castro hit a three-run homer and the Chicago Cubs beat the New York Mets 7-0 Sunday.

"I don't really notice a lot of the rumors," Dempster said. "I just handle what I can handle and that's going out there and pitching and doing my job. Wherever the cards fall they fall."

Dempster (4-3) was activated from the disabled list then pitched five innings of four-hit ball in his first outing since June 15, when he experienced tightness in a back muscle. His lengthy string of zeros is the Cubs' best for a starter since Ken Holtzman went 27 innings in 1971.

The Cubs made it as comfortable as possible for Dempster, scoring four runs before he even threw a pitch.

Alfonso Soriano had an RBI single, Jeff Baker a run-scoring double with a jam shot to the opposite field and Geovany Soto drove in two runs with a single against Jonathon Niese.

Niese (7-4) had only given up four or more runs in a game five times - 16 starts - this season entering Sunday.

"They came out swinging," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "He was trying to get ahead (and) they were hammering the first pitch."

The Cubs finished the first half in the midst of a modest surge, winning nine of 13 to improve to a disappointing 33-52 in Theo Epstein's first year in charge. It's their worst record before the break since 2006 when they were 34-54.

The team has been a little up and down but everybody hustles right now," Castro said. "Let's see in the second half everybody pull a little bit together and win more games."

The Mets had a chance to move a season high-tying eight games above .500 but continued a recent trend of trading wins and losses. They go into the All-Star break 46-40, their best first half since 2010 when they were 48-40. New York finished a homestand against last place teams, Philadelphia and Chicago, 3-3.

Not that the Mets didn't have had their chances Sunday. They put runners in scoring position in each of first three innings and also in the sixth but came up empty.

Dempster put his streak in jeopardy by allowing a one-out triple to Scott Hairston in the second but he got Jordany Valdespin to line out to second and Josh Thole to groundout to shortstop. Niese and Ruben Tejada opened the third with singles but the Nos. 2-3-4 hitters couldn't capitalize.

After Tejada's hit, Dempster retired nine in a row before being lifted.

"He was way more efficient than we thought," Cubs manager Dale Sveum said. " Everything went well. He feels great."

The right-hander was scheduled to start the Cubs' first game after the All-Star break on Friday but Sveum said Dempster will start Saturday instead to better fit his throwing program. Paul Maholm will move up from Saturday.

Dempster has won four in a row after an 18-start winless streak dating back to Aug. 11. He struck out four and walked none.

Maholm came on in relief for the first time. He made 201 consecutive starts until he entered in the sixth and gave up two hits. But the Mets failed again with runners on. Ike Davis popped to shortstop and Lucas Duda grounded into a double play.

Manuel Corpas, James Russell and Shawn Camp finished the eight-hitter.

Niese had settled in after the first, allowing only one hit until Luis Valbuena singled with one out in the seventh. Reed Johnson singled with two outs and Castro hit the first pitch for a three-run homer, his seventh long ball this year.

"A little tough the last couple of weeks, but today something good happened," Castro said.

Niese allowed seven runs and nine hits in seven innings.

NOTES: To make room for Dempster on the Cubs roster, Chris Volstad was optioned to Triple-A Iowa. Volstad is 0-7 this season. ... Mets prospects RHP Zach Wheeler and 3B Wilmer Flores were scheduled to play in the MLB Futures Game in Kansas City Sunday. ... Valdespin started in center field for first time in his career. ... Game took a crisp 2 hours, 8 minutes. ... Collins said Johan Santana will not start Friday. He'll go Sunday or Monday instead. "We're going to let Johan's ankle have an extra day or so," Collins said. "He's fine. Don't misread anything." Santana twisted his ankle in Friday's start, when he gave up a career high-tying 13 hits.

Extreme heat bakes Midwest and East Coast

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Highways buckled in Illinois and Wisconsin, water use was cut back in Indiana and those who had power in the mid-Atlantic were urged to conserve it, but the heat gripping much of the country was only expected to worsen Saturday.

Temperatures of more than 100 degrees were forecast in Philadelphia, authorities warned of excessive heat in the Midwest and the power outages surpassed a week in the mid-Atlantic, where extreme heat was expected into the weekend.

A major storm in the area last week left behind damage, which combined with the high demand for power to stress the electrical system's capabilities, a Washington-area utility said. Hundreds of thousands remained without power Friday night in the Appalachians and mid-Atlantic, mostly in West Virginia.

Tens of thousands were still without power in the Midwest as well after storms there this week. Utilities hoped to restore service over the weekend in Michigan, where temperatures were forecast in the 90s.

One man in the state figured out a way to beat the heat: stay in the car.

That was the plan for 60-year-old Roger Sinclair of Batavia, Ill., who was headed home Saturday morning from Detroit, the city of his birth.

Sinclair, a dispatcher at a plumbing company's call center, visited the Motor City over the past few days to see an old friend and catch Friday night's Tigers game.

While he enjoyed the game, a 4-2 Tigers win, the conditions were less than ideal.

"It was 97 at the first pitch and still in the 80s at the time of the last out," he said. "It was tough. There was no breeze."

Before heading home Saturday, though, Sinclair wanted to see a Great Lakes ore carrier make its way through the city's waterways. So, he tracked one down the Detroit River, driving ahead of it and parking on Belle Isle, which sits in the middle of the river between the city and Windsor, Ontario.

Sinclair, standing along the riverbank and shielding his eyes from the sun, watched the Algomarine slowly head west.

"You just don't see this in Chicago," he said.

As the vessel traveled out of sight, Sinclair walked to his car.

"This is how I've dealt with it the last couple of days," he said. "A lot of time in the car."

Record temperatures were set Friday in the Indiana cities of Indianapolis, South Bend and Fort Wayne, where temperatures could reach 106 degrees but feel more like 114. In central Arkansas, Russellville reached 106 degrees, breaking a record set in 1964.

The heat was blamed for at least 23 deaths.

Nine people in Maryland have died of heat-related causes in recent days, the state said. Authorities in Chicago said heat was a factor in six deaths there, mostly among older people. Three deaths in Wisconsin and two in Tennessee were also reported to be heat-related.

In Ohio, a man in his 70s and two women ? one in her late 60s, the other in her 80s ? were found dead this week, said Dr. Jeff Lee, a deputy county coroner in the central part of the state. He said all three were suffering from heart disease but died from stress caused by high temperatures in their houses. Temperatures inside were stifling, recorded in the 90s in two cases, with windows shut and no ventilation. The houses lacked electricity because of recent power outages.

"If they had gotten cooling, we would have expected them to survive," he said.

Relief was on the way in the form of a cold front as the weekend ends, but forecasters expected it to bring severe weather, too.

The rain should help dry spells in many places. Much of Arkansas is enduring brown grass and seeing trees lose their green, and farmers in Ohio are growing concerned about the dry conditions, considered among the worst of the past decade.

Residents of and visitors to the tiny hamlet of Hell, Mich., had their own ways of dealing with the high temperatures.

"Every day is a good day to be in Hell," said businessman John Colone, the community's unofficial mayor, who owns a canoe and kayak rental and Scream's Ice Cream. "More people have told you to go to our town than anywhere else on Earth."

Colone said the number of people heading out on the lake recently was lower than normal.

"It's just been so hot," he said.

Still, Colone said, he's encountered a number of tourists who wanted to say they'd been to Hell on one of the hottest days of the year.

LA schools superintendent shakes up district

Faced with a shocking case of a teacher accused of playing classroom sex games with children for years, Los Angeles schools Superintendent John Deasy delivered another jolt: He removed the school's entire staff ? from custodians to the principal ? to smash what he called a "culture of silence."

"It was a quick, responsible, responsive action to a heinous situation," he said. "We're not going to spend a long time debating student safety."

The controversial decision underscores the 51-year-old superintendent's shake-up of the lethargic bureaucracy at the nation's second-largest school district. His swift, bold moves have rankled some and won praise from others during his first year of leadership.

Hired with a mandate to boost achievement in the 660,000-pupil Los Angeles Unified School District, Deasy has become known for 18-hour days that involve everything from surprise classroom visits and picking up playground litter to lobbying city elite for donations and blasting Sacramento politicians over funding cuts.

He's also gained a reputation for outspokenness and a brisk decision-making style some have criticized as heavy-handed. Earlier this year, for instance, Deasy ordered a substitute teacher fired after finding students doing busy work.

"I'm intolerant when it comes to students being disrespected," he said in an interview sandwiched between school visits and meetings. "I do what I think is right and everyone has the right to criticize. You appreciate the critics, but you wouldn't get up in the morning if you listened to them."

Doing what he thinks is right has put him in some unusual positions, such as siding with plaintiffs who successfully sued the district over closely protected teachers' union tenets ? seniority-based layoff policies and leaving out student test scores in teacher performance evaluations.

"He acts on behalf of kids, you can't fault him for that," said A.J. Duffy, the former president of the teachers union United Teachers Los Angeles, who now runs a charter school. "But there are processes. People do deserve a fair and equitable hearing."

As the school year was ending last month, Deasy was focused on hiring 80 new principals, particularly at troubled urban high schools some have called "dropout factories." Deasy pushed 50 current principals to retire or transferred them and he aims to interview replacement candidates himself. Developing leadership is a cornerstone of his reform strategy.

Deasy moves at a rapid clip, whether it's through the candidate lists, his reform agenda or in striding around school campuses. "Keeping up with Dr. Deasy" is a well-worn joke around the district.

He is under a tight, self-imposed, deadline to get reforms in place in four years and see higher test scores, graduation rates and other education metrics in eight years.

    7. Sex offender nabbed in case of missing college student

"The culture in this district has been talk, protest, argue, not actually do," he said. "This style has come up against that."

School board President Monica Garcia applauds Deasy's speed. "People are feeling very confident in his leadership," she said.

The urgency of his mission drives Deasy.

He's up at 3:30 a.m., goes for a run and reads emails and the news before starting office meetings at 5:30 a.m. His wiry frame, topped with a crewcut, emphasizes that meals are often a luxury unless connected with work ? he keeps energy bars in an office drawer. A recent lunch consisted of frozen yogurt.

He works through much of the weekend, too, although he reserves Sunday nights for Patty, his wife of 27 years. The couple has three grown children who live in the Los Angeles area.

Deasy is not concerned about burnout, but he worries about getting engulfed in pessimism. "It's 101 percent negativity all the time," he said.

So when there's good news, he revels in it. He ticks off recent increases in language proficiency rates for English learners, and declines in dropouts and suspensions.

He hopes to see more results from new policies he's pushed through, including giving teachers and principals more autonomy and more rigorous graduation requirements.

Once a week, his driver takes him on a round of unannounced visits to a few of the 1,000-plus schools, a source of both inspiration and exasperation as he moseys around corridors alone, introducing himself to students as "Dr. D."

There's no idle chitchat. Deasy fires questions about grades or graduation at students and enrollment or staffing at administrators.

He gets advice on managing an organization with a $6 billion budget and 65,000 employees from his executive coach, Kevin Sharer, the former chief executive of Amgen, the world's largest biotech company.

However, there was nothing to prepare him for the case of Miramonte Elementary School teacher Mark Berndt, who has pleaded not guilty to accusations of feeding students cookies smeared with his semen in "tasting games."

Deasy's removal of the school's staff resulted in protests by parents and a raft of union grievances. The teachers, who were warehoused at another location, may now return to the classroom at Miramonte or another school, Deasy said.

Deasy also ordered principals to pull teacher misconduct files from the past 40 years. Those files are under reviewed by a special panel to determine if further action is warranted. Some 500 previously unreported cases have been forwarded so far to the state teacher licensing commission.

Teachers union President Warren Fletcher lambasted the move as a hasty and counterproductive effort to deflect attention from managerial failures.

Fiscal issues loom as the district's greatest challenge. The district has lost $2.7 billion in state funding and laid off 12,000 employees over the past five years. For the upcoming school year, 4,300 employees lost their jobs, and the rest agreed to 10 furlough days, including five fewer school days, to close a $390 million shortfall.

"He got handed a pretty rough plate," said Charles Kerchner, education professor at Claremont Graduate University. "The whole district is sort of teetering financially."

Deasy has formed a foundation, The Los Angeles Fund for Public Education, to seek private donors.

"That a city this size and this wealthy does not invest more philanthropically in its public education, that, to me, has been pretty amazing," he said.

Deasy hadn't planned to pursue an education career. The son of two Massachusetts teachers, he aimed to be a doctor but couldn't afford medical school. He wanted to get married so he became a science teacher and found his calling.

He quickly ascended the career ladder, serving as superintendent at school districts in Rhode Island, California and Maryland before taking a job with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation where he worked on policy issues, including teacher evaluations.

He jumped at the chance to go to LAUSD, a district that is 73 percent Latino and 80 percent low income. One of his motivations is working to offer privileges afforded him, a white male, to others. Pictures of Cesar Chavez, Martin Luther King Jr. and a Barack Obama "Hope" poster decorate his office.

"This is where it matters," he said. "Delivering opportunities to kids."

On a recent visit to Esteban Torres High School in East Los Angeles, two seniors inform him they are the first in their families to graduate high school. Both said they plan to pursue criminal justice studies at community college.

A wide smile breaks out on Deasy's face as he congratulates them heartily. "You see these men," he said later. "It's what keeps you going."

Yahoo and Facebook Confirm Deal To Cross-License Their Patent Portfolios, Sell Ads Together

Facebook Yahoo PeaceFacebook and Yahoo are calling off their heated patent lawsuit battle, and in fact have just agreed to cross-license their entire patent portfolios to each other without money changing hands, sources directly familiar with the deal tell me.?Sources also confirmed that the two web giants are entering into an ad sales partnership that will let Yahoo show Like buttons in its ads, as first reported by?Kara Swisher of AllThingsD?this morning. Update 1:15pm PST 7/6: Facebook has just confirmed?the patent portfolio cross-license agreement as well as the ad sales and distribution partnership in a press release. However, Swisher noted the companies would only cross-license "some key patents", and Facebook might have to pay to license others from Yahoo. The patent deal is actually much larger. It encompasses their entire intellectual property stockpile such that they won't have to pay be able to use each other's patents, and won't be able to sue each other over them either.

Apple's Jobs tapped French system for pre-Internet ideas

The man who turned Apple into a Web-connected empire of consumer gadgets drew some of his inspiration from a table-top box that wired French households to networked information way before the arrival of mass Internet, a French telecoms engineer says.

Long before hundreds of millions of homes worldwide began connecting to the Internet in the 1990s, France's Minitel box, the steam train of the online world, attracted the attention of Apple's now-deceased founder, Steve Jobs.

The clunky Minitel, pulled out of service at the end of June, was used by some 25 million people in France at the time for services ranging from checking the weather to making travel reservations and posting small ads.

"He bought one and took it to bits to see how it worked," Gerard Thery, one of the Frenchmen behind the 1982 launch of the Minitel system, told business newspaper Economie Matin.

Two decades of Internet sealed the fate of what once looked like a technological wonder that might conquer the world with a then wide range of shopping and travel booking services, accessible via the dial-up code 3615.

Its famous "Minitel Rose" sex chat lines were blamed for the astronomical phone bills of many unwitting customers.

Originally designed by France Telecom as an online directory to save paper, the Minitel never caught on abroad and was used by fewer and fewer French in recent years as the Internet, and the flashy gadgets made by companies like Apple, rendered it obsolete.
