Alaska Airlines passenger's confidence shaken by message on wing

While aboard an Alaska Airlines flight leaving Burbank, Calif. bound for Seattle, Wash., a passenger looked out a window to see a handwritten message scrawled on what appeared to be a damaged area of the plane's wing.

"We know about this," the note said. Below the message, an arrow pointed down to a portion of the wing that appeared to be missing.

The passenger took a picture and uploaded it to social news website Reddit under the name Boeing247.

"The maintenance team for this Alaska Airlines 737 sure knows how to instill passenger confidence," Boeing247 said. "The method of communication here shows a unique level of professionalism."

Commentors on the posting weighed in on the airlines' unorthodox policy, including one Delta airlines operations employee.

"This is for the ground personnel meeting the arriving aircraft (parkers), who are required to inspect the ship and document any damage found on arrival. Marking apparent damage prevents reports from being filed at each station at which the aircraft arrives," the employee said. "Delta does not do this and we inefficiently file a report tens of times for damage that has already been documented, creating needless redundant emails and work."

Alaska Airlines spokeswoman Bobbie Egan said that the photo showed a permanent approved trim repair to the corner flap of the right wing, and that the plane was absolutely safe to fly.

"The small indent shown in the photo was reported multiple times in multiple flight crew reports. A maintenance technician wrote on the wing to acknowledge to flight crews that the repair was made, documented and that the plane was airworthy," she said.

Egan said the airline immediately removed the message from the wing upon hearing about it, and apologized for any alarm it may have caused.

Top 5 Reasons You Never Hear Back After ... - Business 2 Community

People often wonder why they never hear anything back after they hit ?send? on the email with a resume attached or on the on-line job application. If you?re very lucky, you might have a preliminary email exchange with a recruiter and then never hear from them again. It?s a depressing experience, and one which also casts a shadow on the hiring company?s reputation. So why does it happen? Is it you, is it them, or is it just something every candidate must prepare for in the hiring process?

There?s no question job seekers face an uphill climb. High unemployment nationally means more competition for every position; according to a January 2012 article in the Wall Street Journal,Starbucks ?? attracted 7.6 million job applicants over the past 12 months for about 65,000 corporate and retail job openings??

An oft-cited recruiter?s complaint is that as many as 50 percent of people applying for a given job simply aren?t qualified. Adding to the challenge, most large companies ? and many smaller ones ? use talent-management software to screen resumes, weeding out up to 50 percent of applicants before a human even looks at a resume or cover letter. The deck is definitely stacked against the job seeker. So how do you break through?

Here are my top 5 reasons you?re not hearing back after applying for a job, with five suggestions for ways to avoid the Resume Black Hole.

Why You Never Hear Back

  1. You really aren?t qualified. If a job description specifies a software developer with 3-5 years of experience and you?re a recent graduate with one internship, it?s unlikely you?ll get a call. Avoid disappointment ? don?t apply for jobs for which you lack qualifications. Most job descriptions are written with very specific requirements. Yes, the company is trying to find the most qualified candidate; yes, they are trying to weed people out. It?s not personal, it?s business.
  2. You haven?t keyword-optimized your resume or application. Job descriptions are salted with keywords specific to the skills or attributes the company seeks in applicants. A close read of the job description is a necessity, as is keyword-optimizing your resume and cover letter, if you?re using one, or email. If the job description lists words in a certain order, e.g. a list of programming languages required, use the same order in your resume.
  3. Your resume isn?t formatted properly. You might think distinctive formatting will set your resume apart, but automated programs don?t care if a document is pretty. Help a machine out. Be consistent in formatting ? consider using separate lines for former employer, job title, and years worked.
  4. Your resume is substantially different from your online profile. LinkedIn, Dice and other online profile sites can be useful tools, so it?s important to make sure they match what?s on your resume. This may seem to be a contradiction ? in #1 I advised keyword optimization ? but it?s really common sense. Jobs worked, employers, years on the job and other details should match. The subtext here is always tell the truth.
  5. The company received 500 resumes for one job posting, and yours was 499th in. Looking for a job is a job. Do your research ? know which companies you want to work for, organizations where you sense culture fit. Every morning scour the job postings and jump on anything for which you?re qualified (and in which you?re interested.) Being early with your resume or application does matter. Check back often in the first few days to make sure the listing hasn?t changed. Often a company will post a job and halfway through the process change the description.

It?s hard to game the system. Your best bet is still a personal referral, and even that may not be enough to get a call. A guy I know gave his resume to a woman who worked at a company where a good job had been posted. He received an automated email noting his resume had been received but never heard another word. After a month he asked his friend to check with the recruiter. It turned out the job description had changed, but the recruiter never bothered to let the referring employee ? or the applicant ? know. This isn?t unusual, unfortunately. So what can you do?

How You Can Get Noticed

  1. Research interesting companies on social media. Find out who the recruiters are and follow them. Many will tweet new postings, so watch their streams and jump on anything for which you are qualified. And if they tweet news saying the company?s had a great quarter, retweet the news with a positive comment.
  2. Consider starting a blog in your area of interest or expertise. It?s a social world; time to build a trail of breadcrumbs leading to you. Include the blog, and links to any especially relevant posts, in your emails to recruiters with whom you?re working.
  3. Get professional help with your resume. Either a resume writer or an SEO expert can help you increase your odds of getting through the talent management software. If you can?t afford this step, read the top career blogs for advice.
  4. If at all possible, don?t wait until you?re out of work to find your next job. I realize for many people this isn?t possible or might even be offensive, but your chances of finding the next job are best when you?re still employed.
  5. Network. Old advice, but still true. Be visible, be upbeat, be informed about industry trends and news in your area of expertise.

Finding a job is tough, no question. I?ve talked to other recruiters who say they only respond to 30 percent of applicants. The odds are good you?ll be in the 60+ percent who hears nothing a lot of the time. Don?t take it personally ? it?s not a rejection of you, it?s a reflection of the times. If you don?t hear back, know you?re not alone.

Samsung will pay up to $300 for your old phone

1 day

Samsung, in a smart marketing move, has figured out how to tempt you even more into buying one of its new phones: It's offering to take your old phone,?no matter the make,?in trade, and pay up to $300 for it.??

The key wording is "up to" ? and a quick check shows a wide disparity in pricing. For example, a 16 GB iPhone 4 will net you $165; a Samsung Exhilarate, $175, but a Motorola Droid 2 will fetch only $20.

There are services?like Gazelle and NextWorth, of course, that will buy your old phone without making you get a new one. But the offer by?Samsung ? already the world leader in smartphone sales, according to IDC?Research?? is?unusual for a manufacturer.?

IDC?noted in a recent report?that?Samsung "topped the 50 million unit mark and reached a new quarterly smartphone shipment record in a single quarter ...?What remains to be seen is how the company?s smartphones will fare against Apple's next-generation iPhone expected later this year."

The trade-in offer, available only through Samsung's Facebook page, lets you choose from these new devices: Samsung's hot new Galaxy S III, Galaxy II or the hybrid smartphone/tablet Galaxy Note.

Samsung says on the Facebook page:

Upgrading is simple. You'll get a quote, purchase a new Samsung smartphone, and mail in your old phone within 30 days. Then you'll get a check mailed to you for your refund. If you've already purchased a new Samsung smartphone, have the proof of purchase handy.

Also note the fine-print wording: "Trade-in refunds are subject to change until the order is submitted."

Alawite filmmaker assassinated in Damascus

An Alawite film director was assassinated near his home on the outskirts of Damascus, Syria's General Cinema Institute said on Tuesday.

"Treacherous hands assassinated" Bassam Mohieddin on Sunday, the institute said in a statement, adding the killing took place in Jdaidet Artuz, scene of recent clashes between troops and rebels.

Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, confirmed the assassination.

Born in 1955 in the coastal city of Tartus, Mohieddin held an MA in filmmaking and television from the National Academy of Film and Theatre Arts in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Mohieddin was a member of the Alawite offshoot of Shitte Islam to which President Bashar al-Assad belongs. The majority of Syria's population is Sunni Muslim.

Rights watchdogs have expressed fears that the Syrian uprising -- in which more than 21,000 people have been killed since March 2011 -- is becoming increasingly sectarian.

Florida forecast: Continued slow climb out of joblessness hole

By Jim Stratton, Orlando Sentinel

11:23 a.m. EST, August 5, 2012

Construction jobs in Florida have been decimated in recent years, but they are projected to grow by 4.5 percent in fiscal year 2014, by 9.4 percent in 2015 and by 12.1 percent in 2016. (Tom Burton, Orlando Sentinel file / Aug 05, 2012)

Florida's long-suffering job market looks like it's going to suffer a little longer.

The state's official forecasters are now saying unemployment is likely to remain north of 8 percent through the fiscal year 2014, averaging 8.4 percent over 12 months.

Recent improvements in the jobless rate are expected to slow, with unemployment falling by just one-tenth of a percent ? from 8.5 percent in fiscal year 2013, to 8.4 percent in 2014.

Forecasters say the jobless rate won't drop below 8 percent until fiscal year 2015, when it is projected to average 7.9 percent. Florida's unemployment rate has been higher than 8 percent since December 2008, when it hit 8.2 percent.

The numbers are part of the state's latest economic forecast which overall calls for steady ? but uncomfortably slow ? progress in the next few years.

"Basically, it shows continued sluggishness until the end of 2013, followed by a more significant recovery," said William Seyfried, an economist at Rollins College in Winter Park. Seyfried said the state report is consistent with national forecasts he has reviewed.

The state's labor market will take years to fully heal, with forecasters projecting a jobless rate above 6 percent through 2018.

"We're getting into the difficult arithmetic of bringing that unemployment rate down," said University of Central Florida economist Sean Snaith. "This is going to be an extended process."

In part, that's because recent progress on the jobs front is something of an illusion.

Forecasters say almost 70 percent of the decline in unemployment is the result of people leaving the labor force. And once someone stops looking for work, he or she is no longer considered unemployed.

A shrinking labor pool has helped push the state's jobless rate down from 9.9 percent in December 2011 to 8.6 percent now. But had the size of the labor for remained constant, analysts say, statewide unemployment would still be about 9.5 percent.

The state's unemployment may become a re-election issue for Florida Gov. Rick Scott.

Scott has staked his political future to job creation, and when the 2014 campaign gears up, he could still be facing a statewide jobless rate of 8 percent.

"The hole," forecasters wrote of the state's labor market, "is deeper than it looks."

That's particularly true for construction, which provided hundreds of thousands of solid middle-class jobs before Florida's housing market collapsed.

Construction has since lost about half its labor force, and forecasters say the sector will continue to shed jobs through the end of this year before rebounding.

Construction is projected to grow by 4.5 percent in fiscal year 2014, by 9.4 percent in 2015 and by 12.1 percent in 2016. But the gaudy numbers are a little misleading. Even if the big percentage gains pan out, the total number of construction workers will be significantly below pre-recession levels.

"The growth may seem eye-popping," said Snaith, "but it's not when you consider how the sector has been so devastated."

The professional and business services sector is expected to grow by 3.6 percent this year, 4 percent in fiscal year 2014 and 5.1 percent in fiscal year 2015. Educational and health services ? which posted gains even during the recession ? is projected to grow by about 2 percent each year.

Leisure and hospitality is expected to add relatively few jobs statewide, growing by 0.8 percent in fiscal year 2014 and 1 percent in 2015. In metro Orlando, that sector accounts for about 20 percent of all jobs, up from about 17 percent before the recession.

The state's official forecast is regularly updated, and it is not unusual for its projections to change over time. Seyfried said the numbers could easily be re-shuffled by world events.

"The big questions are what do we do about the [federal] budget issue and what is going to happen in Europe?" he said.

Richards-Ross takes 1st US gold at Olympic track

(AP) ? Disappointment, tears and that oh-so-unsatisfying color ? bronze ? are all in the past for Sanya Richards-Ross.

On this trip to the Olympics, she closed the deal.

Four years after a late fade left her crying and wearing the Olympic bronze medal, Richards-Ross won the 400-meter gold she always thought she could.

"What I have learned is you don't win the race until you win the race," Richards-Ross said. "I knew I had to cross the finish line first to call myself the Olympic champion."

She did it.

Nearly banging elbows with runners on both sides of her ? and with the defending champion making up ground on the outside ? Richards-Ross got stronger, not weaker, this time over the last 100 meters.

She surged to the finish, won by about a body's length and punched her fist when she crossed the line in 49.55 seconds Sunday night to give the U.S. its first track and field gold medal of the London Olympics.

"I just kept saying, 'You can do this, you can do this,'" Richards-Ross said. "I just dug really deep and I'm very happy."

Defending champion Christine Ohuruogu of Britain finished second in 49.70 and American DeeDee Trotter, decked out in red, white and blue glitter on her face, won the bronze in 49.72.

This moment, though, belonged to Richards-Ross, whose parents relocated from her home country of Jamaica when she was 12, in part to advance what looked like a promising running career.

At the end, she wrapped herself in the American flag and went to the stands to embrace her husband, Jacksonville Jaguars defensive back Aaron Ross, who took time off from NFL training camp to travel to London.

"You finally did it, you finally did it, babe," he told his wife. "Enjoy the moment."

Back in Florida, the Jaguars invited about 1,200 fans into their stadium to watch their favorite adopted track star's victory on the big screen.

Across town at their new house, the Rosses have to make more space in the trophy room. Ross has two Super Bowl rings, the last one captured last season with the New York Giants. His wife now has an individual gold to go with two others she won in previous Olympic relays, with more possible in this year's relays.

"We don't compete," Richards-Ross said. "His Super Bowl ring just gave me motivation."

The world's top runner at this distance for much of the last four years, Richards-Ross has nonetheless been waiting impatiently for another shot at the individual gold she thought she'd grab in 2008.

That time, the final 100 meters of her race was a disaster. Leading coming into the stretch, she fell back dramatically, and a few minutes later, Ohuruogu was clutching the gold and Richards-Ross was crying in the lower level of the Bird's Nest.

Quite a different result this time around ? and quite a different scene at the finish.

"The run was phenomenal," Richards-Ross said. "It's very, very challenging to get on the Olympic stage and give your best performance, to balance your emotions and physical. It's a huge weight off my shoulders. I kept telling myself, 'You are the champ. You are the champ.' To go out there and actually accomplish it is really fantastic."

She's been through quite a lot over the past four or five years.

Health issues almost certainly contributed to the bronze medal in Beijing. Richards-Ross spent five years fighting an autoimmune disease called Behcet's syndrome, but after a visit to a different doctor, she thinks she's been misdiagnosed.

Fighting her illness ? which causes fatigue, sores around her mouth and splotchy skin ? with a new treatment, the five-time U.S. champion arrived in London feeling as good as she has in years.

It showed in this race ? the warm-up act for the men's 100-meter final won by Usain Bolt. Shortly after Bolt's celebration was over, Richards-Ross had the stage again for her medals ceremony. The U.S. national anthem played and Richards-Ross closed her eyes and sang the lyrics. Sweet music for a victory she's been seeking for four years.

"She worked so hard," Aaron Ross said. "All the emotions going through her mind, my mind, her family's mind, everybody that's seen the struggles. It's just a great moment right now."

Archaeologists find traces of 2500-year-old chocolate in Mexico

Archaeologists working in Mexico have announced a discovery of 2,500-year-old chocolate. While the existence of chocolate is not surprising, what did amaze researchers is that the traces of chocolate were found on a plate instead of a cup. The discovery was made on Mexico's Yucat?n peninsula. According to NPR, archaeologists have concluded that ancient Mayans did not only drink chocolate flavored beverages, but also used it as a condiment or sauce on foods. This changes earlier belief that chocolate was solely used as a beverage, typically for wealthy members of ancient societies in Mexico. The finding was made public by Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History. "This is the first time it has been found on a plate used for serving food," archaeologist Tomas Gallareta said, reported the Associated Press. "It is unlikely that it was ground there (on the plate), because for that they probably used metates (grinding stones)." Associated Press reported the plates examined date back to approximately 500 B.C. These are not the oldest traces of chocolate located in Mexico, as older samples were found in other dig sites dating 1,000 years earlier. The significance of this find is that it may provide insight as to the dietary customs in these eras. This leads experts to believe that there may be ancient roots that connect to modern traditional dishes eaten in Mexico. "This indicates that the pre-Hispanic Maya may have eaten foods with cacao sauce, similar to mole," the anthropology institute said in a statement. National Geographic had reported in 2002 chocolate residue had been found in an ancient ceramic "teapot" and researchers said it had suggested that the Mayans and ancestors had been consuming chocolate as far back as 2,600 years.
