Literary masterpiece 'Infinite Jest' visualized in Google map

7 hrs.

David Foster Wallace fans: Put down your copy of D.T. Max?s newly released biography of the writer, Every Love Story Is A Ghost Story and click immediately on Infinite Atlas. Non-fans, stop whatever it is you?re doing and do the same.

Infinite Atlas is, in the simplest terms, "an independent research and art project seeking to identify, place and describe every possible location in David Foster Wallace?s 'Infinite Jest.'" In broader terms, it?s an infinitely absorbing marriage of literature and rich location-based data.

The map is the work of Washington-based writer, and dedicated "Infinite Jest" fan, William Beutler.

Beutler actually launched the project earlier this year in the form of Infinite Boston, a blog-based photographic tour of locations that figure into DFW?s complex study of life, addiction, depression, failed entertainment, and tennis. At the time Beutler wrote: "In July of what might have been Year of Glad, one year ago this week, I traveled to Boston, Massachusetts with the express purpose of visiting as many of the landmarks and lesser known precincts that appear in, or provide inspiration for, the late David Foster Wallace?s 1996 novel "Infinite Jest" as I could manage on a Thursday-Sunday trip. My reasons for doing so will become apparent at a later date, but for now I am pleased to present what I am calling Infinite Boston: a ruminative travelogue and photographic tour of some fifty or so of these locations, comprising one entry each non-holiday weekday, from now until sometime in early autumn."

More from Fast Company:

That later date has arrived and we now have the Infinite Atlas, a mind-bendingly detailed Google Maps-based compendium of over 600 IJ locations. Visitors can click on the map to reveal details about each location from the novel, in many cases including quotes, as well as where the site appears in the book and which characters are associated with it (and Beutler hasn?t just covered off your A-list places, like Enfield Tennis Academy and Ennet House. To wit: the listing for Marty?s Liquors, "Which Gately drives past in Pat Montesian?s black 1964 Ford Aventura"). Locations can also be discovered via search, and through a comprehensive lists of characters (again, we?re not just talking about Hal Incandenza and Michael Pemulis--the list includes everyone down to "the Watertown, NY boy who owned Ward and June, progenitors of the Concavity?s feral hamsters") and story threads. Fans are also encouraged to submit photographs of the locations.

The project also includes a poster version of IJ sites, the Infinite Map, available for purchase here. The map depicts the novel?s ?territorially reconfigured North America? and features 250 of its most interesting locations (as well as the Great Seal of O.N.A.N., pictured above).

Beutler, who had worked as a political journalist and is now a communications consultant, says the project has been four years in the making. "I re-read Infinite Jest after Wallace?s passing, and became obsessed with the idea that there was a way to treat Infinite Jest as a very large data set," he says. "It turned out that others had done so previously, the designer Sam Potts in particular, but with a primary focus on the relationship between characters. So I didn?t want to retrace that route. Meanwhile, I was influenced by friends involved in cartography, and I?ve always found maps to be fascinating, so both of these things pushed me in this direction."

At first, a map of locations was just one of many ideas, he says. "At one point I was going to include box scores for the Enfield Tennis Academy players, but the further I got into research, the more I realized how much more there was to do with geography."

The scope of the project meant Beutler brought in a number of creative partners, including agency JESS3 and DC web development company RedEdge, which helped bring the interactive map to life.

When it came to compiling the project?s staggering volume of data, Beutler had additional help. "A lot of the early research was compiled by a friend from back to college, named Olly Ruff, who had also first read Infinite Jest years ago," he says. "We each spent dozens of hours combing through the book, page-by-page, in late 2010 to make sure that we missed nothing, and to argue about what was where and what was the significance. We had those conversations right up to the point where we had to send it off to the printer. The early information architecture was done by another friend, Lyzi Diamond, who had recently earned a degree in Geography from the University of Oregon. Our eventual cartographer was Derek Watkins, who is now a graphics editor at the New York Times."

As for Beutler?s plans for the project, he says, "I?m really hoping to get readers to upload photographs of locations that I haven?t visited--and considering the scope of the project is global, that?s still most places. Otherwise, there are still some details to correct--our database is very good, but not free of noise--so that will take me some time to iron out the details. Even as I say that, I think the site is about 95% correct. It always takes a lot more effort to improve from there, but I?m just enough perfectionist, and just enough a fan of "Infinite Jest" to stick with it."

Brazilian players upset by jeers in friendly

By TALES AZZONI

updated 11:29 a.m. ET Sept. 8, 2012

SAO PAULO (AP) -Brazil players have criticized their own fans for the booing and jeering by supporters during a lackluster 1-0 win over South Africa in a friendly.

The loud booing by more than 50,000 fans at the Morumbi stadium could be heard for most of Friday's match, targeting both the players and coach Mano Menezes. The jeers began early in the first half as Brazil struggled and at times the fans even applauded South Africa.

"When you are playing at home you would expect to have the support from the fans but that's not what happened, unfortunately," Brazil right back Daniel Alves said. "If we had the fans behind us everything would have been easier, but that's not the mentality here. We have to understand that and just keep doing our job."

Players acknowledged the team didn't play the beautiful football its fans were hoping for. But they said that supporters needed to get behind Brazil ahead of the World Cup at home in 2014.

"We are used to getting this type of reaction when we play away from home, but we knew this was possible here too," goalkeeper Diego Alves said. "It's difficult to play with this type of pressure from our own fans, but I guess we better get used to it because we know the World Cup will be played here and there could be more then."

Brazil's winner on Friday came from substitute striker Hulk in the 75th minute.

"Not even superhero keeps fans from booing," read a headline at the O Globo newspaper on Saturday.

Young striker Neymar, the player expected to lead Brazil at the World Cup, heard the most jeers from fans. When he was substituted near the end, the crowd loudly chanted against him.

"The national team won but we still got booed, that's new for me," he said. "It's sad for something like this to happen, I think my resume should speak for itself, but that was not the case."

In addition to not playing well, as a Santos player Neymar was already at a disadvantage - playing in a city that's home to his team's three main rivals.

Fans in Sao Paulo have traditionally been tough on the national team, which is based in Rio de Janeiro and historically has had closer ties with that city. Brazil has often had more difficulties pleasing fans in the bigger football centers, including Rio, and it wasn't the first time the team got jeered at home.

The disapproval was greater than usual because of the ongoing discontent with coach Menezes, who was booed nearly every time he left the bench to give instructions to players or to make substitutions.

At one point, fans chanted: "Goodbye, Mano."

Many fans and local media have been calling for his resignation because of the team's disappointing results and poor performances recently. The pressure increased after he failed to lead Brazil to the gold medal at the London Games. Brazil was a clear favorite to win the under-23 tournament but lost in the final to Mexico. The Olympic gold is the only trophy Brazil has yet to win in international football.

"It hurts a little bit for this to happen here," Menezes said. "This is not new but we have to try to change this perception. We will be playing the World Cup here at home and it will be a lot easier if we have the support from the fans. We know the moment is not good, but we need their understanding."

Menezes revamped the team after taking charge following the 2010 World Cup, introducing several promising young stars including Neymar, Oscar, Leandro Damiao and Lucas. Most of the players summoned for Friday's friendly were in the Olympic squad.

"The younger the team is, the more the players will feel this lack of support," Menezes said. "We hoped to have a more favorable environment here."

The next test will be on Monday, when Brazil will play a friendly against China in the northeastern city of Recife.

"We hope the fans there will be more reasonable," Menezes said. "It's going to be another tough match and if the goals don't come early we will have difficulties. But if we have the support from the fans it will be less complicated."

The pros secret time managing technique ... - Self Improvement

In today?s busy world which is filled with running here, there and everywhere, trying to fit more hours into the day than you possibly can and trying to do too much, how could slowing down possibly help you in your time management techniques?

Actually by slowing down and taking it a little easier you can get more done, as silly as it sounds. Slowing down allows you to get a better perspective on the situation at hand and to think more clearly, it enables you to become more energized with a clearer outlook and fresher mind. Here are some time management techniques to help you slow down and look at things with a clearer mind.

If you feel you are running out of time and haven?t got all you should have got done accomplished then the first mistake many people make it to go rushing about blindly trying to do too many things at once and not really accomplishing anything at all. This is the time when the technique of slowing down can really benefit you. The easiest way to do this is to forget everything that your body and mind is telling you, such as you have to do this, you have to do that, and instead just flop back into your chair, let your body go loose and let out a big deep sign. Once you have done this feel the tension leaving your body and imagine all the stress you are feeling right at this minute leaving through the top of the head as steam.

As the steam gushes out through the top of the body start to breathe slowly and evenly in through the nose concentrating on how the breathe feels as it enters your nostrils. Hold your breath for just a few seconds before letting it back out again slowly though the mouth ensuring that all the breath leaves your body. Continue breathing in this way for around 5 minutes or so, all the while imagine the steam of your frustration slowing down until finally all the steam has dissipated.

This whole process is quick and easy to learn and master and is the core behind slowing down and actually getting more done, once you have done this and allowed your whole body and mind to become relaxed and let the strain and anxiety slip away you will find that you are able to concentrate better on the matter at hand and in fact you do get more accomplished when relaxed and calm than when anxious and rushing around.

This is one that is easy to pick up and master and once you have done so it will allow you to quickly relax and get one. Of course it won?t be easy at first distinguishing when you are building up ready to explode only time will allow you to be able to tell when you need to take time out, but with practice you will get there.

Building A Mailing List The Right Way Is More Than Worth It :Online ...

Friday, September 7th, 2012 at 3:20 pm ?

building a mailing list is one of those things where the total influence it has primarily rests on other considerations.

One of the few things that is consistent amongst internet marketers is their insistence that a subscriber list is the only way to generate profits is with a mailing list. They?ve all said that the only way for you to earn money consistently on the web is through the consistent building and mailing to a list of people who don?t only want to hear from you but who will want to buy the things you?re selling. However building a top quality list that will order the things you are selling is much easier to talk about than it is to do. Email marketing is a large process, and obtaining the email addresses is merely a small part. If you aren?t working to build a rapport with the folks who sign up for your list, you?re not ever going to discover the success you?ve been aiming to find.

The best part of building the list is to acquire the names and email addresses. What is hard is establishing the relationship with those subscribers after you have welcomed them. The absolute first thing that you should do is make sure that you have permission to send emails to your prospect and the second thing is setting up a way for them to very easily unsubscribe from it when they would like to. There are many strategies to obtain the addresses, and it can be, either offline or online. Your site pages must have links posted for your opt-in box. You can actually give your online subscribers many incentives to sign up for your list like free things, free shipping and various bargains. There are numerous places offline where your links may be posted, including newspapers, magazines, surveys, and a great many others.

We trust that what you?ve reading through currently about building a subscriber list, and likewise additionally the particular details regarding Internet marketing, is going to be helpful to you personally. Please do continue reading below to acquire further details about these subjects.

Email is flooding all over the net constantly and it is crucial to find out the easiest way to welcome every new subscriber to your subscriber list. You just have to get the readers to open the emails you send and the only way to make this happen is through the building of a trusting relationship. You cannot just slap together any old email campaign and then expect that all your online subscribers will automatically want to open the emails they receive from you. You need to prepare your readers from the website?s opt-in page, along with the welcoming letter. To start with, you need to get your subscribers? names and emails. When they have signed up, send a confirmation email so that you will know that you?ve got consent to continue sending your emails. Then you send your thank you email in which you request whatever additional information you are looking to obtain from them.

Now comes your welcoming email, which will spell out what you are going to be sending, and how frequently, to build trust. Send samples of your best newsletters or other things you believe will work best to make them continue opening your emails. Everything else you do after this is all about developing a trusting relationship with your readers because if they stop opening your emails it?s not going to matter one iota whether or not they are actually on your subscriber list. Deals are a fantastic way to keep people opening your emails.

You don?t only need to be committed to building your email list, you must have a lot of energy and time for it as well. But when you see your list and your profit margin begin to grow you will see that all of that work was really worth it.

Obama speech: Hope has become hang in there

President Barack Obama waves as he joins Former President Bill Clinton during the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2012. (AP Photo/Charles Dharapak)

(AP) ? For President Barack Obama, hope has become hang in there.

On the biggest stage of his re-election bid, Obama is dropping some tough love on voters, offering no fast solutions for a nation whose spirit has been sapped by economic insecurity.

"You didn't elect me to tell you what you wanted to hear," Obama said in excerpts of the speech he was delivering Thursday evening at the Democratic National Convention.

"You elected me," he said, "to tell you the truth."

The message was reminiscent of the night Obama won the presidency four years ago, when supporters reveled around him, but his words of change in America were tempered by caution about how long and hard the climb back to prosperity would be. It has indeed been that hard, so much that Obama is using his address this time to reach back to the Great Depression.

Calling his first term a mere start, Obama reached for Americans to join him in a "bold, persistent experimentation that Franklin Roosevelt pursued during the only crisis worse than this one."

The substance of the new Obama deal consists of the economic pillars of Obama's campaign: manufacturing, energy, education, national security and debt reduction.

Even though it was Obama who said just this week that "a convention speech is never a State of the Union speech," the outline released in advance by his campaign sure looked like one, right down to specific policy goals such as recruiting 100,000 math and science teachers over the next 10 years.

For a nation short on job security, this is Obama's night to protect his own. He speaks to a television of audience of millions in the 10 p.m. EDT hour.

Obama's speech will be about promise ? the kind he'll say he has kept, and the kind of feeling he wants to stir once more. He will take people back to the start of his presidency to make a case why their lives are better, but his bigger imperative is to sell himself as better for middle-class America than Republican Mitt Romney.

Gone is the newness of the last time he stood up to accept the nomination of his party. Obama, the graying incumbent, will not try to recreate it.

Instead, he will whittle the election down to a choice, spelling out his vision of how to create economic opportunity for all, and warning that Romney would restore trickle-down ideas that Obama says were quietly gutting the economy for years before crashing it completely.

Obama will also try to summon inspiration again that America is right on the cusp of what it could be.

Campaigns can thrive or die on voter passions, and Romney had his shot at this first. At his own convention last week, he told a TV audience of millions that it was a telling sign if many people's best feelings about Obama peaked the moment they voted for him.

Gone, too, is the setting Obama wanted for the biggest address of his re-election bid.

Democrats opted for their convention's rented basketball arena instead of a much larger, open-air football stadium for Obama, wary of the safety and political risks if rain came pouring down.

Yet tighter, packed quarters of energized supporters could present just the optics Obama wants on TV. He must give his backers and undecided voters a reason to mobilize behind him.

It worked on Wednesday night for former President Bill Clinton, and for first lady Michelle Obama the night before that.

In a nation in which more than 23 million people are unemployed or underemployed, Obama will focus instead on the millions who have found work, and how many more can, too.

He will ask for more time, just as Clinton foreshadowed.

As Clinton put it: "No president ? not me, not any of my predecessors ? no one could have fully repaired all the damage that he found in just four years. But he has laid the foundations for a new, modern, successful economy of shared prosperity. And if you will renew the president's contract, you will feel it."

Expect him to talk about ending the war in Iraq and promising to close the still-raging war in Afghanistan, particularly after mocking Romney for never addressing the latter in his own convention speech. Every speaker at the Democratic convention has contributed to the collective message that Obama wants to send of a diverse party that protects gay rights and women's reproductive rights.

Yet it all comes back to the economy, Obama's biggest burden.

2014 Ford Fiesta gets 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine, sporty ST

2014 Ford Fiesta five-door hatchback

For the 2014 model year, the Fiesta gets a little leaner with a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder engine, and a little meaner with a new 180hp ST model.

Despite its funky looks and miserly mpg numbers, the Ford Fiesta has not been a sales success. Luckily, the Fiesta gets a few updates for the 2014 model year, including a more efficient EcoBoost engine, a sporty ST model, and new styling that evokes the 2013 Fusion. The revised Fiesta will be unveiled later this month at the Paris Motor Show.

The current Fiesta has only been on sale for two years, but it went under the knife early in keeping with Ford CEO Alan Mulally?s need for ?constant new product.? The most noticeable differences are an Aston Martin-like grille and revised headlights borrowed from Ford?s most important new car of 2013: the Fusion midsize sedan.

As with the current model, Fiestas will be available as three- and five-door hatchbacks in Europe, but the three-door hatch won?t make it to the United States. Instead, the four-door sedan will return for North American buyers.

Another big change is under the hood. Ford will sell European Fiestas with a new 1.0-liter, three-cylinder EcoBoost engine. This inline-three seems like a shoo-in for the U.S. as well; Ford has already announced that it will sell the new engine here in the larger Focus.

The tiny EcoBoost makes the 1.6-liter, 120 horsepower inline-four in the current Fiesta look like a gas guzzler.

The 2014 Fiesta isn?t all about efficiency, though. Ford will also sell a sporty Fiesta ST five-door hatch (Europe gets a three-door), with a 180 hp version of the 1.6-liter four. The ST, first shown as a concept at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, is like a scaled-down Focus ST.Ford Fiesta ST concept front three-quarter view

The Fiesta ST has the same gaping mouth grille as the Focus, and the same torque vectoring front differential, designed to erase torque steer. Ford says it will do 0 to 60 mph in under seven seconds. It?s about as close to Ken Block?s Gymkhana car as most people will get.

On the less steamy side of things, Ford is also adding some new safety technology to the 2014 Fiesta. Active City Stop can stop the car automatically from certain speeds. MyKey can limit the Fiesta?s top speed and adjust other settings (it?s the perfect option for parents with irresponsible teenagers). Finally, Emergency Assistance will automatically call for help after a crash, using the car?s GPS to pinpoint its location.

Hopefully, Ford will build its 2014 Fiestas well. If any of those safety systems malfunctions, it would make for a very unusual insurance claim.

The 2014 Fiesta will will be formally unveiled at the Paris Motor Show later this month; U.S.-spec models will be shown at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show in November. The revised Fiesta will go on sale in the U.S. in early 2013.

Spacewalking astronauts conquer stuck bolt with toothbrush

A $100 billion space station saved by a simple $3 toothbrush? It was the brainstorm of astronauts Sunita Williams and Akihido Hoshide and NASA engineers on the ground: a tool to clean a bolt that gave them so much trouble during a marathon 8-hour spacewalk last week.

They were trying to replace an electrical switching unit, but on Thursday they couldn't bolt it to the outside of the station.

What to do if there is no hardware store in the neighborhood and the next supply ship is months away? Build it yourself -- so they attached a simple toothbrush to a metal pole and voila! They were able to clean out the bolt's socket today and finish the job. Shades of Apollo 13 -- when engineers threw parts on a table and brainstormed a solution, which saved the crew.

Spacewalking is incredibly difficult -- the astronauts wear space suits that fight every move they make. Williams wrote about last week's spacewalk in her blog.

"You don't just 'go outside,'" she said. "Usually that is the fun and easy part of the entire thing -- suit sizing, tool gathering and preparation, equipment gathering and preparations, studying new procedures, reviewing and talking through how to get us suited and how to get the airlock depressed, reviewing the tasks we will do with each other and with the robotic arm, talking about cleaning up, and then talking thru a plan to get back into the airlock, and any emergencies that can come up -- loss of communications, suit issues, etc.

"Yes, that took a lot of our time leading up to Thursday last week. Even planning when to go to sleep and what to eat are important. Remember, you are in that suit usually about 8 hours for a 6 hour EVA.

"To my surprise, the most intense part for this EVA happened to be outside when we encountered our 'sticky' bolt.

"That resulted in a long EVA, and over 10 hours in the suit. No bathroom and no lunch."

Williams and Hoshide accomplished their major tasks on today's spacewalk, and earned champagne when they got back inside the space station -- but, alas, there is no alcohol on the orbiting outpost.
