Higher quality pictures of the iPhone 5 design

Remember those iPhone 5 dummies that were floating around Germany and Taiwan last week? Well it looks like they're starting to hit U.S. shores, social networks, and tip boxes.

iMore previously reported that this is indeed the basic design for the new iPhone, though the final design details will no doubt differ (pentalobe screws, properly typeset branding, etc.) But if you're still eager to soak in as much hype as you possibly can before tomorrow's iPhone event, check out the image above and the one below, and let us know your pre-release thoughts.

9/11: US troops today feel more appreciated, but still poorly understood

Eleven years after the 9/11 terrorist attacks ? and more than a decade after America?s longest war began ? the troops still fighting overseas say they feel a greater appreciation than ever for the work they do.

On the anniversary of 9/11 and throughout the year, they get standing ovations at sports stadiums and robust applause on airplanes.

But whether most Americans actually understand what members of the armed forces do or share in their sacrifice, they add, is another matter.

?I fear they do not know us,? retired Adm. Mike Mullen, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said in a 2011 address to West Point?s graduating class.

IN PICTURES: A Day of Remembrance: Honoring 9/11

?I fear they do not comprehend the full weight of the burden we carry or the price we pay when we return from battle.?

Clearly, it?s not from lack of compassion in the American public, Mr. Mullen and others are quick to stress. But the standing ovations and care packages for troops ? while well intended ? often only reinforce the impression among military families and spouses that a wide gulf of understanding separates them from the rest of America.

A big reason for the divide is the oft-quoted statistic ? particularly among troops ? that less than 1 percent of Americans currently serve in the military. More precisely, during this decade of sustained warfare, only about half a percent of the US public has been on active duty at any given time. (At the height of World War II, the comparable figure was 9 percent, according to the Pew Research Center.)

In a survey released in May by Blue Star Families, a military advocacy group, an overwhelming majority of the 4,200 military respondents and their loved ones ? 95 percent ? said they agreed with the statement that most Americans ?do not truly understand or appreciate the sacrifices made by the service members and their families.?

Another 40 percent said that their community ?did not embrace opportunities to help military children.?

The anniversary of the 9/11 attacks offers an opportunity for Americans to reach out to military service members, and that is very much appreciated, says Vivian Greentree, the director of research and policy at Blue Star Families. But the message doesn't always get through to those who need it, she adds.

?It?s important to be reflective, but it?s even more important to take action,? she says.

For example, Rebekah Sanderlin, whose Army husband is stationed at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, N.C., recalls going to a concert in Nashville, Tenn., with her mom last year. The stadiumgoers got on their feet to cheer the troops. ?I just started crying, and my mom couldn?t understand why. She said, ?They do this all the time.? ?

The problem was, Ms. Sanderlin didn?t know that. Few troops actually go to events like this, says Sanderlin, who writes the blog ?Operation Marriage,? about her experience as a military mother and spouse.

?I think there?s this idea in the civilian world that ?We?re showing all this support ? we do this all the time,? ? she says. ?But places where the big military bases are ? like Fayetteville ? these are small towns without big events. And most military families cannot afford to go to these big events.?

And even for those who can, the daily business of caring for children while one spouse is at war means ?anything outside of daily survival? often becomes ?too much of a hassle.?

She points, too, to another gesture troops appreciate, but which is also a secret pet peeve among soldiers, who quietly joke about it: care packages often hopelessly out of date.

They contain baby wipes and other items that troops have been able to buy at base exchanges in Iraq and Afghanistan for at least half a decade, as well as candy that often offers unwelcome temptation for troops trying to keep their weight down in a war zone.

While such care packages represent a great deal of kindness, they may also contribute to the disconnect troops feel from the civilian world, she posits. ?The person who needs to feel supported doesn?t feel that way, and the person sending the package doesn?t realize their efforts are maybe not the best use of resources.?

Instead, Sanderlin says, there are other causes that benefit troops and their families. With many marriages struggling in the wake of multiple deployments, ?If someone wants to donate money to a good cause,? she suggests marriage retreats.

She also recommends a group called ?Give an Hour,? in which counselors donate their time to troops.

For her part, Dr. Greentree, who is also a military spouse, says that the 9/11 commemorations remind her of the ?amazing sense of solidarity and community that can arise from tragedy ? and that it?s up to us to sustain it.?

She points to the military ethos, and the community it has engendered. ?In the military, you?re only as strong as your weakest link. So if there is a weak link, we figure out how to fix it, how to keep their heads above water ? whatever you need to do to rally around that person, because that is the strength of your unit.?

It is a way of life that she hopes inspires the civilian world. ?I don?t think people have to understand what it is to be in the military, or to be a military family,? she says. ?I don?t understand what it is to be a doctor?s family or a teacher?s family. But I do know that I have a role to play in the success or failure in my community.?

In the military more than a decade after 9/11, the hardship has also led to ?a social capital that binds us,? Greentree says. ?That?s a very positive thing that has come out of the tragedy, and out of 10 years of war.?

Feminine looks, old Hollywood style feature at NY fashion week

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Soft, flowing dresses with mid-calf hemlines in pastel shades of blue, sea foam and grays dominated the runway on Monday as designer Carolina Herrera showed her Spring 2013 collection at New York Fashion Week.

The look was feminine, subtle and light as models seemed to float down the runway in wool-crepe long dresses, twill blouses matched with crepe flounce shorts and elegant color-blocked silk gowns with tulle overlays.

"It is a flirtatious collection with a focus on the essentials and proportions including long fluid skirts and shorts," was how the Venezuelan-born, New York-based designer described her creations.

Shoulders were narrow, and Herrera hiked the waist toward the bustline with long, full skirts for an elongated silhouette that she paired with simple short-sleeved tops.

The designer who is known for her elegance and intricacy and is a favorite on the red carpet with her glamorous designs did not disappoint.

An ivory pleated silk gown included floral embroidery and an oyster snakeskin skinny belt. Another fully embroidered icy-white column gown featured a black tulle overlay.

Like the lace-backed Twilight wedding dress that Herrera designed for actress Kristen Stewart for the film "Breaking Dawn Part 1," the collection had a timeless appeal.

Herrera's love of prints was evident in a motif in pastel shades that she used in various dresses, blouses and skirts that gave a cohesion to the entire collection

"Every dress was stunning," gushed a member of the audience that included activist and former rock star wife Bianca Jagger, actress Julianne Hough, tennis great Boris Becker and "Vanity Fair" editor Graydon Carter.

CELEBRATING OLD HOLLYWOOD AND MATURE WOMEN

While Herrera opted for flirtation and romance, Norisol Ferrari, another Venezuelan-born designer, had Old Hollywood and actresses Marilyn Monroe, Rita Hayworth and Rita Moreno in mind when she designed her spring collection, which featured strong lines, bold colors and plenty of sex appeal.

She described the actresses as "all strong, confident women who command attention, desire and respect," which could also be said of her designs.

With figure-hugging trousers, capris and shorts, fitted, tailored jackets cinched at the waist and pleated in the back and cropped tops, Ferrari celebrated the female form and emphasized all of its curves.

Each of the 33 designs had a suggestive title ranging from A Woman in Love and Girl's Night Out to The Last Tango and An Affair to Remember.

Unlike other shows that feature young, waif-like models, many of Ferrari's designs were modeled by women of a certain age, including one-time supermodel 51-year-old Carol Alt, who drew applause in a flowing, belted black and cream gown.

She was followed by Carmen Dell'Orefice, who turned 71 this year, and wowed the audience in a long-sleeve, fitted 30s style beige gown that was simply titled It's Carmen.

The collection, which featured plenty of black, white, cream colors, had a La Dolce Vita glamour with column gowns, below-the-knee and tapered hemlines and sleek and waisted dresses with button details.

New York-based designer Zac Posen featured a similar look with his collection of gown and cocktail dresses, hourglass silhouettes and floor-dusting trains.

Naomi Campbell opened his show modeling a silk twill and chiffon day dress with a Rorschach-like pink hibiscus print, one of two floral designs that recurred throughout the collection.

Several gowns curved tightly through the waist and legs before billowing into clouds of silk, although he occasionally deviated from the hourglass silhouette with wide frilly flourishes at the waist. Posen also showed jumpsuits with wide-width pants.

The semi-annual Mercedes-Benz Fashion week attracts about 116,000 models, designers, buyers and wealthy customers to New York.

Coldplay, Rihanna, Jay-Z close London Paralympics

LONDON (AP) ? Farewell, London. Good luck matching that, Rio.

Coldplay, Rihanna and Jay-Z rocked the Olympic Stadium on Sunday night to give the biggest-ever Paralympic Games a rousing send-off, wrapping up an unforgettable summer of sports in Britain.

The three-hour party at the packed 80,000-seat arena in east London gave the world a chance to celebrate 11 days of Paralympic competition that have shifted perceptions and shattered stereotypes about the disabled.

"In this country, we will never think of sport the same way and we will never think of disability the same way," said Sebastian Coe, chairman of the London organizing committee. "The Paralympians have lifted the cloud of limitation."

Central to the closing ceremony ? called the "Festival of the Flame" ? were the 4,200 Paralympians from 164 nations who encircled the field of play from the start, waving flags and taking in the extraordinary atmosphere. By the end of the extravaganza, they created an international mosh pit in front of the stage as volleys of fireworks rocketed above.

"I think it's been an absolute triumph from start to finish," said British Prime Minister David Cameron, whose disabled son Ivan died in 2009. "I think back to Ivan. As every parent, you think about all the things they can't do, but at the Paralympics they are superhuman, you see all the things they can do.

"It's been a golden summer of British sport."

Coming after a hugely successful Olympic Games, the 2012 Paralympics broke all records, with 2.7 million spectators cramming into venues, more than $70 million raised in ticket sales and the games broadcast in more than 100 countries. They are unprecedented figures as the British public displayed an enthusiasm previously unseen in the 52-year history of the Paralympics.

The wide exposure introduced the world to Paralympians such as Dutch wheelchair tennis player Esther Vergeer ? who extended her nine-year unbeaten streak to 470 matches by winning the women's singles ? and David Weir, a British wheelchair racer who won four golds in his home city.

It also enhanced the reputation of iconic South African double-amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius, who became the first track athlete to compete in both games. He won two golds in the Paralympics, including in the 4x100-meter relay which was one of 251 world records broken at these games.

"I think people are going to look back at this Paralympic Games and for the first time really, truly believe that Paralympic sport is not just inspirational, it's hard-core sport," said Pistorius, who drew a rousing cheer as his image was displayed in a montage of Paralympians on the big screen.

A moving tribute to wounded British servicemen and members of the British army opened the show. Luke Sinnott, a captain who lost both legs from above the knee in an explosion in Afghanistan in 2010, hung the Union Flag at the top of flagpole in the middle of the stadium. Rory Mackenzie, a serviceman who lost his leg on patrol in roadside bomb blast, gave a sonorous introduction to the theme of the four seasons that was at the heart of the show.

Proud flag-bearers from all competing nations marched in before a Mad Max-style parade of 25 trucks and motorcycles, in shapes that included peacocks and fish, stormed the stadium and kick-started Coldplay's set.

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin belted out top-selling hits like "Clocks," ''Viva La Vida" and "Paradise."

"Nobody said it was easy," a lyric from the moving song "The Scientist," seemed particularly apt for the occasion.

Coldplay, who were given a standing ovation when they performed their final song "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall," said: "We can't actually imagine a bigger honor" than playing at the Paralympics in their home city.

Artistic director Kim Gavin created an electric production. White confetti rained down as snow, black crows on stilts encircled the stage, flaming butterflies swirled in the air and a flying motorbike driven by highwire artist Laszlo Simet with disabled dancer Lyndsay Adams powered across the stadium.

"Being at the Paralympics is the biggest honor," said Rihanna, who first appeared dressed in a flowing orange gown before changing to a see-through black top and dark sunglasses. "These athletes are gladiators and are a true inspiration to me."

She sang "We Found Love" while swinging in a chair high above the stage, a performance sure to give her insurer a heart attack.

Such was the global attraction of performing at the closing ceremony that organizers were able to turn down approaches from other major artists ? but they wouldn't name names. Sunday night's stars, artists who have sold millions of records, were being paid a nominal one pound ($1.60) to play.

The ceremony finished with the cauldron ? made up of 200 petals ? being extinguished, ending the games in London and passing the baton to Rio de Janeiro for 2016. The handover saw Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes wave the Paralympic flag with abandon before Brazilian pop stars danced onto the stage.

Speaker after speaker acknowledged that after London, the Paralympics will never be the same.

"On Aug. 29, we opened with the theme of 'Enlightenment,'" said Sir Philip Craven, president of the International Paralympic Committee. "Tonight, we are enlightened and armed with a superior knowledge of what can be achieved. The legacy of these games will be long-lasting."

Serena Williams comes back to win US Open

NEW YORK (AP) ? Finally tested, even trailing, at the U.S. Open, Serena Williams turned things around just in time.

Two points from defeat, Williams suddenly regained her composure and her strokes, coming back to win the last four games and beat Victoria Azarenka 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 on Sunday night for her fourth championship at Flushing Meadows and 15th Grand Slam title overall.

"I honestly can't believe I won. I really was preparing my runner-up speech, because I thought, 'Man, she's playing so great,'" Williams said during the trophy presentation after the 2-hour, 18-minute match, adding: "I'm really shocked."

Might be the only one.

After all, what really was stunning was that the top-ranked Azarenka made things as interesting as they were, given that she came into the day 1-9 against Williams.

Add in that Williams hadn't dropped a set in the tournament, losing only 19 games through six matches before Sunday. All part of a tremendous run she is putting together in reaction to her loss at the French Open in late May, the American's only first-round exit in 49 career major tournaments. Since then, she is 26-1, winning Wimbledon and the London Olympics.

There hadn't been a three-set women's final in New York since 1995, and Williams came through with a late charge to become the first woman to win Wimbledon and the U.S. Open in the same season since a decade ago, when ? yes, that's right ? she did it.

"She never gives up," said Azarenka, who managed only 13 winners, 31 fewer than Williams. "She's definitely the toughest player, mentally, there is and she's got the power."

While Azarenka, a 23-year-old from Belarus, doesn't have the name recognition or bona fides of Williams, she did win the Australian Open in January, and was 32-2 (a .941 winning percentage) on hard courts in 2012. She also hadn't dropped a three-setter all season until Sunday, going 12-0 in matches that went the distance, including victories over defending U.S. Open champion Sam Stosur in the quarterfinals and 2006 champion Maria Sharapova in the semifinals.

As Sunday's third set commenced, Williams' mother, Oracene Price, told her from the stands, "Settle down."

Didn't happen right away.

"Well, she's a human being, you know, who has two feet, two legs, two hands," Azarenka said. "It's understandable."

When Williams double-faulted, slapped a bad backhand into the net and pushed a forehand long, Azarenka broke at love for a 4-3 edge, then followed that up by holding for 5-3.

One game from the championship.

Azarenka was two points away at 30-all with the fourth-seeded Williams serving in the next game, but couldn't convert. And when Azarenka served for the victory at 5-4, she showed the jitters that probably are understandable given that this was only her second career Grand Slam final, 17 fewer than Williams.

Azarenka made three errors in that game, including a forehand into the net that let Williams break her to 5-all. Williams kept whatever excitement she might have felt contained, face straight as possible, while her older sister, seven-time major champion Venus, smiled and clapped in the stands.

That was during a key stretch in which Williams took 10 of 12 points to go ahead 6-5. She then broke again to win, dropping onto her back on the court when Azarenka sent a backhand long to end it.

"Feels like there is no room for a mistake," is the way Azarenka described trying to deal with Williams' game. "There is no room for a wrong decision."

Azarenka slumped in her changeover chair, a white towel covering her head, as Williams kept saying, "Oh, my God! Oh, my God! Oh, my God!" while scurrying over to share the joy with her mother and big sister.

"Being so close, it hurts deeply," Azarenka said. "To know you don't have it. You're close; you didn't get it."

Williams, who turns 31 on Sept. 26, is the first 30-year-old woman to win the U.S. Open since Martina Navratilova in 1987.

Williams is dominating the game right now. And she's been dominant, off and on, for more than a decade.

She won her very first major championship at age 17 at the 1999 U.S. Open. Winning titles 13 years apart at the same Grand Slam tournament represents the longest span of success in the professional era, which began in 1968. Navratilova (Wimbledon, 1978 and 1990) and Chris Evert (French Open, 1974 and 1986) had the longest previous spans of 12 years.

Every so often, though, Williams' reign has been interrupted by health problems.

She missed eight months after having surgery on her left knee in 2003, the year she had completed a self-styled "Serena Slam" by winning four consecutive major titles.

Of more concern was what happened only a few days after she won Wimbledon in 2010. Williams cut both feet on broken glass while leaving a restaurant in Germany, leading to two operations on her right foot. Then she got blood clots in her lungs and needed to inject herself with a blood thinner. Those shots led to a pool of blood gathering under her stomach's skin, requiring another procedure in the hospital.

In all, she was off the tour for about 10 months.

"She was so disgusted at home. She felt like she was useless. That's the way it is with athletes, I guess. She couldn't sit still," Price said Sunday night. "She was getting depressed. A lot to overcome."

Talk about making up for lost time.

After her stunning first-round loss at Roland Garros to a woman ranked 111th, Williams went back to work, getting help from Patrick Mouratoglou, a coach who runs a tennis academy in France. She's 14-0 in Grand Slam matches since then; the Wimbledon trophy ended a two-year drought without a major title.

Mouratoglou came to New York with Williams, and he noticed the he way she set aside her mid-match struggles.

"Players usually completely lose their confidence and they can't get all of their tennis back. But she got all her tennis back. Like nothing happened," he said. "This is what was most impressive. She's not like the other players."

In the men's final Monday, defending champion Novak Djokovic will face Olympic gold medalist Andy Murray. It's the fifth consecutive year the tournament will conclude on Monday instead of the scheduled Sunday because of bad weather.

Djokovic beat David Ferrer of Spain 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 in a semifinal that was halted in the first set because of impending rain Saturday and wrapped up Sunday.

Worries about a potentially dangerous storm led the tournament to postpone Williams-Azarenka, making this the fourth time in the last five years that the U.S. Open women's final was pushed from Saturday to Sunday.

When they got started, Williams was good as can be, compiling a 16-2 advantage in winners through the first set.

She pounded big serves ? she finished with 13 aces, at up to 125 mph ? and big returns; smacked forehands and backhands out of Azarenka's reach; even tossed in a terrific backhand lob to break for a 2-0 lead at the outset.

Both women had issues with the officiating ? though nothing compared to Williams' misadventures in the past.

In the 2009 semifinals, Williams was angered by a foot-fault call that resulted in a double-fault, setting up match point for her opponent, Kim Clijsters. Williams launched into a racket-brandishing tirade that resulted in a fine and a Grand Slam probation that made her be on her best behavior or risk being suspended. Then, while losing to Stosur in last year's final, Williams lost her cool and berated the chair umpire ? "You're just unattractive inside," was among the noteworthy lines ? after being docked a point for screaming during a point.

This time, there was a foot-fault call, too. It came with Williams serving at 40-love while trailing 2-0 in the second set. She didn't react at all immediately, finished off that game, then stared down the linesman as she walked to the sideline at the ensuing changeover. He chuckled a bit.

"I'm just happy that she got thru this one without any incident and was able to try to forget all that in the past," Price said. "Because I think that was a lot in her mind."

Actually, by then, Williams had bigger problems to worry about.

She double-faulted to get broken in that set's opening game, and got broken again to fall behind 4-1 in a game that featured Azarenka sliding into a running forehand winner and nearly doing a full splits. Even Williams applauded that one.

But when the game ended, Williams slapped her racket against her changeover chair.

Azarenka also had a minor run-in with the chair umpire Sunday, complaining when a point she thought she should have won was replayed.

"You're hilarious," Azarenka said, her words and grin drenched in sarcasm.

Caged Wings

Caged Wings

You have escaped. Escaped from the dark clutches of the scientists that have given you excruciating pain. It's time to run now, run away with the rest of the flock. Will you ever stop running? Excuse me, I meant fly away with the rest of the flock...

Hello! I was wondering if you had been considering opening any Eraser positions. If so I would love to be a part of this but if not that's fine.

Alright, thank you. I love the Maximum Ride series and recently finished Nevermore. I can't say that I was overly happy though. :/
