Davis Cup: India take unassailable 3-0 lead against Kiwis

Chandigarh, Sep 15

Vishnu Vardhan helped India take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the Davis Cup tie against New Zealand here Saturday by winning the second singles and a tense doubles match alongside Divij Sharan.

After Yuki Bhambri gave India a 1-0 lead Friday beating Daniel King-Turner in the first rubber, the 25-year-old Vardhan continued the second rubber from Friday, winning 6-2, 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-2, against Jose Statham at the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association (CLTA) Stadium here.

He then turned up with Delhi boy Sharan to beat Michael Venus and Daniel King-Turner 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-3 and ensure India's win in the Asia/Oceania Group I first round play-off.

The day started with Vardhan and Statham resuming the second singles stopped Friday due to bad light when the Indian was leading 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-4.

Vardhan only needed a few minutes before he could conclude the match and give India a 2-0 lead.

In the doubles, both pairs served well forcing the set into a tie-break.

The two teams held their serves on the first four points. However, just before changing sides the Indian pair got the mini-break and held serve to go 4-2 up.

Vardhan extended the advantage with a brilliant serve down the middle for 5-2.

In no time, the hosts had three set points at 6-3 and only needed the first one when Sharan nudged a volley past the net landing beyond the reach of the Kiwis.

In the second set, India had a break point in the second game which New Zealand saved though a forehand winner from the 24-year-old Venus to equalise the scoreline at 1-1.

Immediately after the new balls were brought in the fourth game of the match, King-Turner committed two double faults but did well to hold the serve.

India earned two more break points in the sixth game. Sharan gave away the first as his backhand return went into the net.

However, the Kiwis were not that lucky as a brilliant cross-court volley from Sharan at the net helped India to break for the first time in the match and go 4-2 up.

A poor line judgement call by Sharan, ranked 94 in doubles, gave the visitors a break point which they converted when Venus hit an irretrievable smash.

The New Zealand duo, now leading 5-4, broke in the last game to level the match.

India broke in the fourth game of the third set to go 3-1 up. Four flawless serves by Vardhan took India to 4-1. India did not look back from there and sealed the set 6-3.

The penultimate set saw some long rallies with neither team taking too many chances. The Kiwis though managed to break in the fourth game for a 3-1 lead.

Trailing 2-4, India played remarkable net game, especially Sharan aided the team with quick reflexes and broke back to win the game (3-4).

Eventually, the set went into the tie-breaker.

In a neck-and-neck contest tied at 4-4, the Kiwis took consecutive points to take the set and force the match into the decider.

India, up 3-2, crucially broke the Daniel-Turner serve to go ahead 4-2.

Another brilliant service game by Vardhan saw them go ahead by 5-2.

Vardhan-Sharan sealed the match and the play-off to push India into the second round play-off in October where they will take on Chinese Taipei to avoid relegation in Group II.

India's combination proved good as Vardhan, essentially a baseliner, tagged well with Sharan, who played his first Davis Cup match.

Sharan proved his worth in the team with an excellent net game.

In the last two reverse singles ties Sunday, Yuki Bhambri and Sanam Singh will be taking on Statham and King-Turner respectively.

Anti-Japanese violence in China as Chinese ships violate Japanese territorial waters

The Japanese government?s decision to purchase several of the Senkaku islands from the Japanese citizen that owns them has sparked a new round of violent anti-Japanese riots in China. This TV news report states that there have been protests in about 40 different parts of China:

Photos on blogs show smashed Japanese cars and vandalized Japanese businesses. Japanese citizens have also been attacked.

Meanwhile, the Chinese government is stepping up its aggressive behavior near the Senkakus. Six Chinese patrol ships violated Japanese territorial waters:

China?s Foreign Ministry confirmed Friday that its ships were in the vicinity of the islands, saying in a statement that:

?These law enforcement and patrol activities are aimed to demonstrate China?s jurisdiction over the Diaoyu Islands and its affiliated islets and ensure the country?s maritime interests.?

A few hours after receiving warnings from Japanese coast guard vessels, the Chinese patrol boats left.

NEW YORK ? The Republican presidential ticket sharpened and broadened its attacks on President Barack Obama's foreign policy record Friday, with Mitt Romney blasting Obama for declining to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Romney's running mate accusing the president of failing to lead in a time of global crisis.

?American foreign policy needs moral clarity and firmness of purpose,? GOP vice presidential nominee Rep. Paul Ryan said in remarks prepared for delivery Friday at the conservative Values Voter Summit in Washington.

Romney has struggled to make the case against the sitting commander in chief as angry anti-American protests in the Arab world turned violent this week. After an initial statement mischaracterized the tumultuous events, Romney has taken a mournful tone about the loss of a U.S. ambassador and three other Americans in Libya and instead is making a broader argument that Obama has a pattern of sending the wrong message to the world.

His running mate was even more pointed in speech excerpts released by the campaign.

?Look across that region today, and what do we see?? Ryan asked. ?The slaughter of brave dissidents in Syria. Mobs storming American embassies and consulates. Iran four years closer to gaining a nuclear weapon. Israel, our best ally in the region, treated with indifference bordering on contempt by the Obama administration.?

Romney, appearing at a $4 million breakfast fundraiser at a New York hotel, called the lack of a meeting with Netanyahu "an extraordinary confusing and troubling decision."

?This is our closest ally and best friend in the Middle East,? Romney said. ?It stands between a nuclear Iran in some respects and a region that would have more stability without a nuclear Iran. And yet when the prime minister of Israel says, `I'm going to be in New York. Can we meet?' And the president says, `No, I'm too busy,' I can't imagine that circumstance. I don't know what the president is trying to send to the world in terms of a message but it does send a message.?

The White House has denied that Netanyahu requested time with Obama during meetings of the United Nations General Assembly later this month. The White House has cited scheduling conflicts; Obama spoke with Netanyahu by phone for an hour earlier this week.

While Netanyahu and Obama have a chilly relationship, the Israeli prime minister welcomed Romney with open arms when the Republican visited Israel in July. The visit had all the trappings of a tour by a sitting head of state, with a joint news conference, policy briefings and meetings between aides to the top Israeli leader and the Romney supporters and donors who also came to Jerusalem during Romney's trip.

Romney's comments at the fundraiser, where 900 donors spent from $2,500-$25,000 for tickets, were his first on the matter. Notable attendees included Woody Johnson, owner of the New York Jets.

Obama is spending a weekend off the campaign trail, sticking to the White House as the anti-American protests continued across the globe and the Republican ticked tried to stem the president's recent momentum in the race.

Obama had planned to spend Saturday and Sunday in Washington even before the demonstrations against an anti-Muslim film erupted in the Middle East earlier in the week and spread beyond the region Friday to Muslims in India and Indonesia.

But the developments were certainly at the top of the daily classified security briefing he was receiving Friday morning in the Oval Office with Vice President Joe Biden. The president later honored the 2012 U.S. Olympic and Paralympic teams on the South Lawn before attending a campaign fundraiser at a Washington donor's home Friday evening.

There were no plans to pull back on his extensive campaign travel next week, which includes rallies in Ohio on Monday, a fundraiser in New York on Tuesday, and a two-city Florida swing on Thursday. A high-ranking national security aide travels with Obama on all of his campaign trips to keep him posted on developments around the world.

Following a quick trip to New York where Romney's campaign says he raised $7.5 million at three fundraisers, the candidate was headed Friday to Ohio, which has been essential to any Republican seeking the White House. Obama carried the perennial battleground state in 2008, but it remains in the toss-up category and could again play a pivotal role in the Nov. 6 election.

Republicans also awaited an Obama administration report, expected to be released Friday, on how it would implement $110 billion in across-the-board cuts in defense and domestic spending due to take effect Jan. 2. The threatened cuts would kick in if Congress and the White House, by year's end, fail to reach a deal to cut the budget deficit by $1.2 trillion over the next decade.

Single gene cause of insulin sensitivity may offer insight for treating diabetes

Thursday, September 13, 2012

The first single gene cause of increased sensitivity to the hormone insulin has been discovered by a team of Oxford University researchers.

The opposite condition ? insulin resistance ? is a common feature of type 2 diabetes, so finding this cause of insulin sensitivity could offer new opportunities for pursuing novel treatments for diabetes.

Although mutations in the PTEN gene cause a rare condition with increased risk of cancer, the biological pathways the gene is involved in could offer promising targets for new drugs.

The Oxford University researchers, along with colleagues at the Babraham Institute in Cambridge, UK, and the Churchill Hospital in Oxford, UK, report their findings in the New England Journal of Medicine. The study was funded by the Wellcome Trust, the Medical Research Council, the National Institute for Health Research Oxford Biomedical Research Centre, and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council.

'Insulin resistance is a major feature of type 2 diabetes,' says Dr Anna Gloyn of the Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Oxford, who led the work. 'The insulin-producing cells in the pancreas may be working hard and pumping out lots of insulin, but the body's cells no longer respond.

'Finding a genetic cause of the opposite ? insulin sensitivity ? gives us a new window on the biological processes involved. Such understanding could be important in developing new drugs that restore insulin sensitivity in type 2 diabetes.'

The PTEN gene encodes for an enzyme that is part of the insulin signalling pathway in the body. It is known to have a role in controlling the body's metabolism, and to play a part in cell growth. The Oxford team was interested in learning more about this dual role.

There is an inherited genetic condition called Cowden syndrome caused by faults in the PTEN gene. It is very rare and is thought to affect perhaps one in 200,000 people, with around 300 people with the condition in the UK. PTEN's role in cell growth sees people with Cowden syndrome develop many benign polyps in their skin, mouth and bowel, and have a higher risk than the general population of developing breast cancer, thyroid cancer and womb cancer.

'PTEN is a gene that is heavily involved in processes for both cell growth and metabolism,' says first author Dr Aparna Pal of the University of Oxford. 'Given PTEN's dual role, we were interested in understanding the metabolic profile of people with Cowden syndrome. It was possible that mutations in PTEN could improve metabolism.'

The team carried out glucose tolerance tests with 15 people with Cowden syndrome and 15 matched controls. Those with Cowden syndrome had significantly higher insulin sensitivity. In collaboration with their colleagues at the Babraham Institute, the team showed that this was caused by increased activity in the insulin signalling pathway.

The researchers also noticed that the body mass index of those with Cowden syndrome appeared greater than the controls. They carried out a comparison with a much larger control group of over 2,000 individuals from the Oxford Biobank, a data and tissue resource for research established by Professor Fredrik Karpe.

This confirmed that those with Cowden syndrome had higher levels of obesity as a group than the controls. The extra body weight appeared to be caused by extra fat, and there were no differences in where the fat was stored compared to controls.

'This was a surprise. Normally insulin sensitivity goes with being lean,' says Professor Karpe.

Dr Gloyn concludes: 'We now know that mutations that inactivate the PTEN gene result in increased cancer risk and obesity, but also increase insulin sensitivity which is very likely to protect against type 2 diabetes.

'The study shows how intimately the biological pathways governing cell growth and metabolism are linked. We need to thoroughly understand these pathways to identify which genes to target in the development of new drugs.'

She adds: 'While there are promising research avenues to pursue here, in the meantime the best way to avoid diabetes remains exercising more and eating less.'

Biden plays to younger crowd in Wisconsin stop

(AP) ? Playing to a younger audience, Vice President Joe Biden stressed differences Thursday between the presidential campaigns on education, college debt and entitlement programs more in doubt for future generations.

The education emphasis during a stop at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire figures into the campaign's newfound urgency to protect a state the Democratic ticket of Biden and Barack Obama won with ease in 2008. Younger voters were a key part of their victory.

Speaking to a crowd estimated by local fire officials at 3,000 people, Biden highlighted tax credits, grant programs and other moves by the Obama administration to defray college costs and increase spending that schools could use to hire more teachers. He portrayed Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney and running mate Rep. Paul Ryan as hostile to those programs.

"They hardly mention education at all except in a negative context," Biden said.

He frequently pointed to budget proposals by Ryan, the House Budget Committee chairman, that would cut spending on items like college Pell Grants.

Exit polling in Wisconsin showed Obama beating his 2008 Republican opponent among 18-to-24 year olds by a wide margin, 61 percent to 38 percent.

A Romney campaign bus circled the campus where Biden appeared. Afterward, Romney spokesman Ben Sparks said he expects Republicans to make inroads among younger voters.

"All they have done is come of age in the middle of a recession," Sparks said. "More students are living at home after graduation and unemployed."

The stop was Biden's second this month, a sign of the state's new importance as an established presidential battleground.

Obama won the state by 14 percentage points in 2008 but Republicans have been on the march ever since. Both sides launched aggressive new ad campaigns in the state this week, hoping to tip Wisconsin's 10 electoral votes their way.

The vice president opened his appearance by paying tribute to U.S. diplomats overseas, particularly the four Americans killed this week at the U.S. Consulate in Libya. But he spent the bulk of his 40-minute speech criticizing the Republican ticket's domestic proposals.

He said Romney's tax plan would disproportionately benefit the wealthy. Drawing a contrast, Biden said the Democratic approach is to "promote the private sector, not the privileged sector."

Democrats at the event didn't hide their urgency. Western Wisconsin, which has vacillated between the parties in recent elections, could prove critical this time.

"As Wisconsin's west coast goes, so goes Wisconsin," said Kathleen Vinehout, a Democratic state senator. "This fall, as Wisconsin goes, so goes our country."

Sparks said Democrats were "running scared."

"Ever since Obama was elected the state has been trending away from him," he said.

President Barack Obama was last in Wisconsin in February. Romney last visited in August.

Ryan, a Wisconsin congressman named last month to Romney's ticket, campaigned near Green Bay on Wednesday. It was his third large-scale rally in his home state in about a month.

Ex-Goldman banker to release revealing memoir

Hachette Book Group

By Roland Jones, NBC News

Goldman Sachs has dealt with a lot of bad publicity lately, including the conviction of a former board member in a government investigation into insider trading and a $550 million settlement with regulators over charges of securities fraud linked to mortgage investments.

But it was a scathing Op-Ed article in the New York Times from a former Goldman employee titled ?Why I Am Leaving Goldman Sachs? that grabbed the most headlines.

In his article, Greg Smith, a former executive director at the investment bank, accused Goldman of routinely ripping off its clients and described the bank?s culture as ?toxic and destructive,? putting profit ahead of the interests of its clients.

Now Smith?s memoir is set to be published on Oct. 22. Titled ?Why I Left Goldman Sachs,? the book will ?pick up where his Op-Ed left off,? according to the memoir?s publisher Grand Central Publishing, a division of Hachette Book Group.

?Smith describes in page-turning detail how the most storied investment bank on Wall Street went from taking iconic companies like Ford, Sears, and Microsoft public to becoming a ?vampire squid? that referred to its clients as ?muppets? and paid the government a record half-billion dollars to settle SEC charges,? the publisher writes in blurb on its website.

Smith will show ?the evolution of Wall Street into an industry riddled with conflicts of interest and a profit-at-all-costs mentality: a perfectly rigged game at the expense of the economy and the society at large,? Grand Central said.

David Wells, a spokesman for Goldman, downplayed the book?s importance.

?Every day, some young professional, after a decade in a postcollegiate job, reassesses his or her career and decides to move on and do something else,? he said in a statement e-mailed to NBCNews.com. ?Others can better judge whether Mr. Smith?s particular career transition is of unique interest.?

Tesla CEO teases crossover and sports car EVs for 2016

Tesla Model X introduction with CEO Elon Musk

Tesla founder Elon Musk would like to remind you that the Model X isn't the terminus of his company's electric car ambitions. Far from it: Musk tells Wired that Tesla's 2016 plans include both a crossover SUV akin to the BMW X3 as well as a pure sports car that goes beyond just a Roadster redux. The racier vehicle will have speed, but "not supercar pricing," the CEO says. He also elaborated on already-known plans for an 'entry' sedan in 2015, which should resemble a 20 to 25 percent smaller Model S and cost about $30,000 if all goes well. There's a wide gap between promises and reality in all those statements, but Musk has a reputation for largely delivering on target -- which gives us hope that there will finally be Tesla EVs within range of everyday budgets.
